Horses at uni?

I'm off to uni next year and I'm starting to worry about what I'll do with my boy. Does anyone out there have a horse at university? Do you have enough time for them? Is it too expensive on a student loan? I'm hoping for it to be a lot cheaper up north near Manchester than here in Surrey, is that the case? I pay about 200pcm for DIY. Also, do you bring them home for the holidays?

Sorry for the barrage of questions, answers much appreciated! :p

What are you doing at Uni? If you are doing a hardcore course like medicine that has pretty much full time hours you will probably struggle with the workload and the social events that uni brings. If you are doing a course like English or Maths that has low contact time then you will have plenty of time to look after your horse. It will be a good way to clear your head writing essays although it might not be so good after a heavy night at vodka revs for £1 a drink!

It's definitely cheaper for everything up north so your right there.

I think the best thing you can do it work out exactly what you will get from your student loan on a monthy and weekly basis and they break down the costs of your horse and all other outgoings.

You could consider part loaning your horse to someone so you have more time and also some financial help.

Hello I took mine to uni do able but tricky depends on your course too...hols I usually brought horse home ie xmas and summer Easter stayed there....up north Manchester area prices anything from 11-35 a week for diy ...pm me if you want anymore info x
 
I took my two to uni, but they lived out with a big field shelter - so less 'yard work' I also had some one who could feed them for me if I couldn't get there due to uni, they came home with me in the hols - might get expensive if you have to pay a retained to hold a stable at your current yard while you're not there?
 
I stayed at home for uni so I could keep my horse. I did English and French and with the hours of my course it wasn't a problem at all. In fact it was totally great as I had loads of time to ride in the daylight in winter and could plan my workload around my horse. The same kind of went for my MA only that was harder as I didn't get any kind of loan or financial assistance so was trying to work pretty much full time alongside a full time course to keep myself and the horse (who was in on DIY livery). That was grim but I survived and passed all the modules I have done so far (submitted the last one last night which I had deferred for a year due to non horsey reasons).
I am now doing Teach First (teacher training grad scheme) and I also brought my horse with me on that. There have been lots of VERY early mornings, early nights and crying-tired episodes, but where there's a will there's a way and she has kept me sane. I can't imagine not having her with me to be honest. Yes the workload would be less but my stress levels would be unbearable.
 
I honestly dont think I would have survived uni without bringing my horse. Admittedly I went to an ag college, so a lot of people also had horses.

He was kept on DIY and came in almost every night - horses preference not mine!! Sometimes I did think I was mad leaving the house at 7 when all my housemates were fast asleep, and often getting back from the yard before any of them had risen, but I loved having the ned there and I couldnt have left him behind!!
