had the physio out yesterday as Kaya has been hollowing in her canter transitions the last few weeks.
she found shes is very sore on both sides behind her saddle area.
everywhere else was very nice and loose and she looked 'spritely' trotting up (shes had 2 days off!!!)
other than the saddle she doesnt know what could cause it.
shes taken the tension off and given me stretches to do with her. and i am going to use one of thoe handheld massage things from boots each week.
what lack of fitting would cause soreness in that one area...?
if the gullet was too narrow surely her wither area wiould be sore..?
if the back of the saddle is moving, what can be done to rectify that?
shes got a Wow, that was checked 5 months ago....

When horses are sore in their sacrum area, they're usually sore in their atlas area (according to my chiro). My horse is often sore around that area, and after releasing tension there, he always releases tension in his head and he's no longer sore and his transitions are fantastic. But since I've had him I have had problems through his back as before I owned him, he was left in a field for 6 months, then ridden in an "elementary" outline to sell him - so it's taken a lot of work to a) make him realise that it doesn't hurt, and b) releasing the tension in the muscles and getting him comfortable again.

How about getting your saddler out to check the saddle fitting, making sure he sees you ride in it as then he can see if it's moving about, or too narrow too wide etc.

When both of mine were sore behind the saddle it was always the saddle causing it I am afraid! On the positive side the WOW is very adjustable so it's probably a case of adjusting it to reflect how her body has changed over the summer.

Frank was sore behind saddle (which is unusual) a couple of months ago, he normally goes 6 monthly but because we had an accident I had him checked out recently and behind saddle fine again. No changes to saddles etc so it might just be one of those things.

He did have a sore head though, thats what comes from scraping your nose along the ground.

she had nothing anywhere else.
in fact the physio said she was brilliant everywhere else....which is why she was quite puzzled. i suppose she could have hurt it in the field but its unlikely....

i am in a dilema now though as i will get the saddler out obviously - but its often a 3-4 week wait... i can lunge to keep her fit, but what about riding..?
when i got the saddler out last time she said the panels werent ideal for her but she may have needed them to get the deep seat. so if its not the headplate its new panels.... eekkkk!
she has filled out alot though as her work has increased and come on loads.

If it is the saddle, I would try not to use it and lunge and ride bareback (if possible). I know it's a pain but it's better not riding in it again and making her sore and having the expense of the physio again!

It's a pain, but least once it's done you can have a clear conscience!

Has your horse gained any weight over the summer? This will make the saddle lift at the pommel causing more pressure at the cantle, hence the pain in the area your horse has.
