I'm still in pieces re what happened to my mare on Saturday, one of the many things on my mind is her passport.
Just after the vet had done what he had to i realised i didnt have her passport with me, i assumed he had to stamp/sign it or something but he said no, dont worry about it.
I offered to take it into the practice in a few days so that they could so whatever they had to do to it. But amazingly, he said that they dont have to put anything in it as she obviously wasnt going for meat. But i dont get it.
She is no longer here, how come a vet doesnt have to mark it? If i was a dodgy person (which i am not!) there is nothing stopping me getting any old 16.2 dappled grey ISH looking mare and selling it with my mares passport!

It's stupid and hidious that it doesnt get stamped or anything????

I assume i just return it to the breed society and explain what has happened???

I agree, it is stupid but yes, return it to the society with the details. I think inside the passport it says somewhere that it should be returned to them in the event of death, at least Weatherbys do.

I know it's trite, but I do hope you are feeling a bit better now and your BP has come right down; have you had it checked yet?

Thanks MFH
i went in to the hospital yesterday and thankfully they were quiet and i saw the lady i spoke to on Saturday and thankfully, they have let me stay at home on the proviso that i rest - easier said than done. They found a few things that were concerning but are happy that i can stay at home until wednesday as long as i call at the 1st sign of a problam.
I have had no sleep last night as i have so many whys? and what ifs ? i guess that is natural thou?
i know a lot of my liveries are really shocked that this is the 1st i have lost as i am a multi owner and have been since i was a child, i just never expected to lose one of my younger ones 1st as i have a field full of vetrans, not saying that i would want to lose any but maybe i could justify it more for an older one who had lived their life to the full etc?

I had my boy pts last Friday, and was amazed when the vet said she didnt have to sign or stamp the passport - I just have to send it back - its madness.
So sorry to hear all your troubles, hope you are doing as well as can be expected.

Oh I've only just caught your other post - I'm so so sorry for your loss. I lost my mare 2 years when she severed a tendon in her stable somehow so I know how you feel, although mine was an old girl not a youngster but it still hits so hard even though I knew that the end was not far away for her.

With my passport, I just returned it to the issuer, in my case the BHS, with a letter stating what had happened. I do think it should be stamped by a vet though.

Hope you feel better soon.

My beloved little shetland was PTS yesterday - I was wondering what to do about his passport, but am too upset to even think about it at the moment. I really feel for you and hope you are ok.

So sorry to hear about your mare but please please take care of yourself and your babies. I myself suffered from pre-eclampsia in my pregnancy resulting in my son being delivered by c-section at 29 weeks so am very aware of the dangers it presents. It is only natural to have the whys and what ifs. Grieve for your mare but try to look forward to your 2 babies. Do you know what sex they are ? or will it be a suprise ?

Please do not worry about your poor horses passport. there seems to be no regulations in place. Just keep yourself well fo your two babies.

When I had my ILPH pony put to sleep the vet didn't do anything to the passport, but he did have to issue a death certificate and I had to send that and passport to ILPH.
Glad to hear you have been able to stay at home, just take it easy and look after yourself.

So sorry to hear about your mare. I had my beloved boy PTS 3 years ago, but it was planned - to have to have it done suddenly must be awful. I've recently had my baby and know how up and down my emotions were during the pregnancy without having any traumas to deal with. Please take good care of yourself. You won't get over the loss of your mare, but the hurt will ease in time.

I kept my lad's passport as a memento of a very special horse.

I was very sorry to hear about your loss - and concerned that on top of the shock, you are under close supervision for pre-eclampsia. Please take care of yourself during this very worrying time and don't get all bothered about the passport at the moment. Yes, they are supposed to be the property of the passport issuing office it was obtained through, but like many others I think I will be keeping mine as treasured memories of much loved ponies. From what I have observed, they are not worth the paper they are written on as any means of certain history or origin

I hope we will all hear some happy news from you soon. x

I couldn't bring myself to return passports, I didn't want them destroyed of stamped 'deceased' so I just kept them in a drawer.

Throughout the life of the horse, and at the end, the passports remain the property of the issuing authority. They should be returned.

When my dear old boy went last Boxing Day, my vet confirmed that they were not required to stamp anything etc. I still have the passport - I think that the whole passport thing has been a comlete waste of time and money (see Operation Esther - how many of those poor animals have passports and what good did it do them?)

As I understand it, ponies passing thru the sales ring can be issued with new passports on the day (never mind whether have one already etc) so what is the point of the whole thing??

I have kept Woody's - and I don't suppose onyone will trouble me for it - it's not like they keep a database of vacinations etc etc.

So sorry to hear of your sad loss tho and hope that your mare is up there at rainbow pass - am sure that my Woody will keep an eye on her (he only had one eye!) - as he was always a man for the ladies.....

Sorry to hear about your mare

I think if you read the terms of your agency who issued the passport they will state that the actual passport belongs to them, therefore in the event of the horses death they request it is returned to them ( does in mine anyway ) However when Simon was PTS i wanted to keep it as its part of my horse to me, i paid for it, so i kept it. Who is to know?? ( except all of you now

The Passport is and always does, remain the property of the PIO and you are required to return it. If you want it back most PIO's are happy to stamp and return it.

And has anyone been asked to supply proof of ownership when their horse has been taken away after being put down? Over the 30+ years of owning horses, we've sadly had a few put down and never once have we been asked to show our passports to anyone - vets or authorised "knacker man". Whose to know whether we were the actual owner of the horse in question or not. As for returning passports, I must admit, we've never done it - like most of you for sentimentality reasons. And how about freezemarked horses - have you notified the relevant company? We didn't even think about this until years later at an equine event when a well known company was trying to get us to get all our horses marked, and when we mentioned we'd had one done years beforehand, they checked their records and said according to them she was still alive, (she'd been dead over 15 years by then). We were under the assumption that any horse with a freezemark had to be notified to the relevant company by whoever took the horse away. Sorry to hear of your sad loss and good wishes go to you.

Yes, the passport does remain the property of the issuing authority. When my filly was put down I rang the AngloEuropean Studbook to inform them and asked if I could keep the passport for sentimental reasons. They noted that she had been PTS (I gave them the vet's contact details in case they wanted verification) and said that I could keep the passport if I wanted as they would only destroy it. I also rang Farmkey to tell them (ditto re the vet's details) and followed it up with an information update card.
