Friend big cob chews stones. She said she had to take 5 (small pebble size)stones out of his mouth in one go.
Have heard of cows doing this to 'rasp' teeth but not horses. His teeth have been checked and needed very little rasping probaly due to the stone chewing lol!!.Owner obviously concerned re colic.
Anyone any ideas why?

How odd... I've certainly never heard of that before. Is he getting all the minerals he needs and everything? Maybe he needs a salt lick. Or maybe it could be boredom - I assume he's out if he can get at stones... does he have company?

He is stabled at night now.Has licks/salt block and gets multi vits so think that part may ok but well you never know.He is in a field with other. He appears settled calm and well in all other respects.
He will do it randomly - when being taken out to field if you stop he will drop head pick up a stone even with tack on does it so have to watch closely.
Obviously owner only knows about the time he is seen doing this.Don't know what happens in his field if he get a hold of one.

He appears to 'crunch' them. You hear the grinding crunching noise but stone doesn't break. He's VERY reluctant to give them up even for treats.Bizarre!

Are you sure she isn't riding a GIANT JRT

Yes, you're right, horses do that in the wild to rasp their teeth......... I'd getting the dentist back/ trying an other dentist. My old horse needed doing every six months; how long is it since he was last checked?
