horses ears

random question, but ive just been looking through some pics of my horse and he always seems to have his eats either out to the side or slightly back (not pinned back, just not pricked up and forwards)...does this mean anything re how happy he is, his mood etc? he never seems to have his ears forwards..

most of the pictures looks like he is just tolerating my presence! he isnt the most cuddly pony lol glad he is relaxed though! interesting about the listening to me thing, he generally doesnt acknowledge me unless i have food lol

just done a google search, and it could also mean bordem? dont know if this is right?
