My OH was eating an orange tonight and pony went mad reaching over the fence to get at it. When OH offered him a bit, he wolfed it down and tried to grab some more! Now he is a greedy pony anyway but I've never seen him this keen on anything. It made me wonder, is there something particular in oranges that he is craving or could it just be that he has a particular food like as we sometimes do?

Other 2 wouldn't touch the orange.

Assume oranges are safe to give (?)

Mine loves whole oranges and whole bananas including the skin. As an occasional treat there should be no problem.
If you want a laugh, give try your horse with a whole small orange or satsuma, it's hilarious when they bit into it and all the juice pops out !! (Just don't stand too close!)

The last horse I had on loan adored oranges! I used to quarter them and feed them to him. Not often, but maybe one every week or two. He was chestnut, his owner joked that oranges were where he got his colour from!

I once fed Jay an apple piece from a M and S fruit salad that was in made in orange juice. He was horrified, and would not eat an apple for about 3 months it injured his psyche so much!

I did have one that liked grapes, had vines outside the stable and he loved them. I did use to limit him though in case they were harmful.

I also know one that once ate a full McChicken sandwich. I guess there would have been little actual chicken in it though! :-D

Never tried giving them oranges! *Goes looking for orange in kitchen*.....

One of our old veterans once stole some of my pineapple, and when I gave her a tiny bit more, she loved it!
Never given it to her or any of the others since, as I imagine it's very sugary and acidic, but she did like it.

Smiley Kylie used to go totally mental for oranges! I used to be mean and peel them just out of his reach and he would buck, spin, rear, bow, turn his head upside down, waggle his tongue and his legs - you name it, he did it if you had an orange! I do miss my orange loving devil in disguise :(

No one else will touch them - even the shetlands.

My gelding goes nuts for tangerines, oranges, lemons and bananas - he'll come trotting at me if he sees anything curved and yellow in my hands. :D

My Connie loves satsumas yes it is funny watching him squelching it down lol. He hates bananas and seems to have gone off grapes! I do limit how many he gets though as he can be a greedy monkey.

My old appaloosa is a bit of a "fruity" loves oranges and grapes. I did a test a while back held out an apple in one hand and a pear in the other everytime he would go for the pear first. He was extremely delighted when the property I bought came with several pear trees, though thankfully none overhanging his paddock or else he would just pig out all day.

Creature loves status as and generally gets one in his tea. He's a massive fusspot for other stuff so I'm pleased he likes these. Hates bananas, pears, swede. Weird horse.

Don't give them if you are competing under rules as believe it or not they apparently contain a 'banned' substance

Ours go mad for banana, but I do insist on peeling it as can't bear to watch them eat the peel. Four out of five love pear, but the fifth acts as if we are trying to poison him. Never been able to try them with orange as the smell of them triggers my migraine.

We tried the stalk of sprouts as a boredom breaker one particularly bad winter.. they all looked at us as if we were mad and refused to touch them. My mare used to love swede but now won't touch it. Funny creatures.
