Horses eating poo........

My friend phoned me to say that my horse is eating another horses poo !!

Apparently, he was in the field and she came to feed them, the other two came for their food and Thomas was mesmerised eating poo. We think it is the mares poo. Three of them share a field........Any ideas?????

There are a few reasons horses may eat poo; lack of fibre, lack of protein, lack of vitamins/minerals/nutritional content of feed, lack of food in general, boredom. Some may decide they like the taste of poo, and so eat it even when no deficiencies are present. In this case possibly it just smelt nice (was the mare in season?), so long as he is getting plenty to eat I wouldn't be worried.
 
I have observed my horses eating poo. Mine must do it out of boredom when they do it beacause I can think of nothing they are lacking.

My aunts horses do it too.

I would not be alarmed...just make sure you are worming them every two months with a high quality broad spectrum wormer.

I think it may be that the mare is coming into season. We only got her 2 or 3 weeks ago and I think he has fallen in love !!

It's most likely to be lack of the correct bacteria in his hind gut....as horses use them to ferment their feed....it could also be a lack of fibre, but less likely.
If you feed the ned probiotics (like Protexin) it should stop. If it makes you feel better, foals do this when young to populate their gut with their mum's bacteria, and adult horses tend to do it if they change feed as the bacteria are, to some extent, feed specific.

the field's next door to me have got 4 mares with foals at foot one foal is going to be mine!!! and a randy stallion!!! All the mares are getting covered by him so are highly in season. ive seen him eating one of the mares poo. its disgusting!!! Is there any mares in season around him? im sooo glad its not a ritual for human men to eat poo!!!
