Horses & electric fencing how do they know!!!

Ive spent the whole moning totally re-fencing 2 acres of the fields. All because the WB decided the grass was greener on the other side & he spotted an escape. He's managed to take down the whole lot including snapping 4 wooden fence posts.

Not a scrap of damage done to himself so i gues thats a plus point, but he's so methodical.

Guess what i didnt have enough electric tape either so had to go buy some. While said WB & his mate's did time in there stables

Hadnt bugeted for that!!

Anyway it seems that my lovely farther had burnt though a section of the electric fencing where he has a fenced off area for burning stuff, this is linked into my electric fencing. So even though the energiser is ticking away there was nothing going through the fencing!!!

So no wonder said naughty WB decided to make his escape i thought i had seen him testing the fencing yesterday & i didnt twig!! No current running though the fencing!!!

Just how do they know

He seems to put his nose as close as possible to the fencing & then he must get a tingling sensation if it's on. If it's not his teeth are round it & off he goes in to devistation mode.

Im knacked from banging wooden posts in to the ground, note to self go back to a livery yard!!!

Sadly this sounds too familiar to us!!

We have a 5yr old TB who has no respect at all for the fence and he knows exactly when it is on or not.

When he has rugs on, esp with full neck, there might as well not be a fence as far as his concerned!
We moved to our 6 acres 1 yr ago and there is still heaps of work to do and places where we really do not want the horses for safety reasons - but he is a nightmare to keep in - our fence must have so many knots in it now... we are prob going to have to replace it all next summer,more money!

It's so annoying isnt it!! Ive been here for 10 years now & all the horses here are really good & respectful. The other 6 acres are all post & rail but i aways rest them & bring horses up to the closer fields in winter.

The WB ive had for 3 years & he didnt understand about going out when i had him. Now i wish he still didnt have a clue about Turn out lol. He's a total menace but quite bright for a WB.

He's been like a lamb for weeks as he had a virus but boy do i know he's well again now lol.

put some fence tape through the front of his rug where the buckles are the rug is insulating the tb from the fence

My horse will go through fencing whether it is on or off or jump the hedge if she wants to go wandering!! The other day she cleared a rather large hedge with barbed wire on the other side and thankfully didn't hurt herself! Cringe!!! She now likes to take her field mate over the hedge to the old railway line which is at the top of the hill and look down over their empire! lol! The only good thing about it is that the railway isn't used anymore!! Luckily she's not done it in a while! Everytime I go to the field i pray they are where they are supposed to be!

Maybe he 'tests' the fence everyday and you just hadn't noticed before! My haffie is very clever and uses her thick forelock as insulation to get the grass on the other side:

UGH! Don't even get me started on my son's pony. NO RESPECT for ANY fence whether it be electic or wooden planks. She literally walks through it! Don't know what to do with her short of ball and chain

I'm another one with a pony that doesn't give a damn about electric fencing, he just darts underneath it, I went round and put it all down a rung, didn't stop him, took his rug off him, that didn't stop him either

He goes wandering around the outside of the fenced off area while the tb stands there cringing with fear as he hates the stuff.

ah i feel for you all, my cob like electric fencing has since he was a baby, likes to stand with his nose on it and get shocks it seems, we have to replace about 4 of the coil gateways a year as he walks thru them pushing until they ping of the connectors but by this time it is no longer coiled, he also will run at it put his head underneath the bottom run and pull it up and go under it and he is not little posts and wooden stakes get trashed in the process. We havent found a way to stop it yet, so if any one has any suggestions to stop one that enjoys it he doesnt wear a rug
