What a bl**dy night. Got home from work and was just playing with the sprog when the doorbell went and a random stranger told me my horse had escaped! Long story short, my TB had broken through the mains electric fence and hotfooted it closely followed by my little boy's welshy. Jumped in the car and rounded them up and they shot back into the field so I put the fencing back. They are now in a couple of small fenced sections munching away like nothing happened.
It's the first time since I moved them home three months ago and the first time in nearly 4 years of owning my TB that anything like this has happened - not sure if it was a mad half hour gone crazy or something spooked them. I now need to review the fencing arrangement. It is only the bottom of the field - approx 50m that is open - the sides are enclosed with garden fences/walls and I have mains electric tape around the lot. The fence at the end is two strands of 20mm tape with alternate wooden and plastic posts and is about 4'6" high. It is pretty sturdy - but obviously not enough to stop half a tonne of horse at full tilt! So options required now.....your opinions on the following welcome - with one eye on cost as field is rented - but mainly on security obviously!
1. Additional wooden posts and high tensile rope
2. As above but mix of rail and tape/rope
3. Full post and rail with electric at top
Additionally we also have another 2 acres at the bottom of the field we are cutting for hay and this is open. We are now running electric around the perimeter of this so it really will need to be a concerted escape effort going forwards!
Heart rate returning to normal now but need to sort this asap or I'll never sleep!
