Horses feeling flat

mine is if he has to do any dressage! he's plenty sparky enough the rest of the time but has decided to die on me the minute he enters a dressage arena.

My eldest horse was a bit flat and in fact I retired in the jumping element of a combined training on the weekend - he just seemed exhausted - in fact was sleeping before I had him back on trailer. I rushed home - took his temp - had a little panic but then Monday night I went to fetch him in from field and he came galloping over, skidded to a halt and then yanked me all the way to the yard. Was considering getting a blood test done but now think maybe its just him (he is 19) having an off moment combined with I brought him in at nights last Friday and I think I upset his sleep patterns. Well I am hoping it was just that! Hope yours is back to normal soon.

I knew he wasn't right.. thought it may be the warm weather and the winter coats coming through. Took him to BCA on Tuesday and he had two poles down SJ and I had to kick xc which is completely abnormal.
Hopefully this is the problem and we can get him sorted.. feel mean for all the kicking now!

Yes!!! mine was offish for a few weeks and I even got bloods done which came back clear (a good waste of £194!). My osteopath is a great believer that many horses really go 'off' while their coats change. My friends horse has now gone off the boil too and again no sign of anything worrying just that nagging feeling that the horse isnt quite 'right'.

My horse felt flat to, just thought it was mine and then spoke to a few people and theirs were the same i think the dry summer and no grass hasnt helped as well as there coats changing. i have put her on pasture mix and enerG by naff and she is back to her old self.

mine 2 iam having her blod tested tmorow and got a bottle of red cell to see if that lifts her up a bit i took her draghunting on sunday and she normaly loves that but she just had no life in her lats see what the blood test show

Mine are a bit 'off' and flat at the moment, I think it's the heat after last week when it was getting colder and now it's boiling again....I also believe as another poster says that horses usually go a bit off colour when the seasons are changing.

I don't think the hard ground helps either. Don't know how the rest of you guys are doing for rain but it's still as dry as a desert here!

I went through a panic phase at the end of august wondering what the hell was wrong with Jack but I have come to the conclusion that it was the ground. So for now we will only be competing on a surface until we get a bit of rain!

Coat change + thicker coat + unexpected, unseasonably hot humid weather + endless hard ground + tired, dull grass = disinterested horse

Even my competing natives are feeling it, very lethargic even the games pony has lost his sparkle these last 2 wks. Don't usually notice a problem but as all of them are like it and all have good vitals i'm putting it down to the usual coat changing.

I am glad I am not alone then. Its just not nice to push a disinterested horse round a course. He's usually flying round loving every minute. Lets hope that when the weather cools down a bit and their coats are through they'll be back to normal.
I even added sugar beet to Winnies feed and usually that sends him a bit loopy!

Glad it's not just me - I had a dreadful lesson last night (feel really bad today about how much I had to 'get after' my horse).
We're dressaging on Sunday so have asked YO to do an emergency clip today because she's so hot.

Yes! My horse too!
The past couple of days he has been really quiet, not quite himself.
He doesn't look in pain but he's just really sleepy and a bit needy. I changed him round to coming in at nights on Monday. He's not eating massive amounts either, he's leaving some of his hay.
This morning I turned him out and because I was worried I went to check on him an hour later. When he saw me he neighed at me, wandered slowly over to the gate and fell asleep with his head in my arms?! When I left he just stood by the gate watching and driving up the road I took one last look and he was picking at the grass near his gate.
I'm meant to be taking him out in the lorry later for a jumping lesson, I hope he will be Ok!

Yes my lad was too.

He's had a really thick coat all summer, drinks alot, wees alot and then started to started to be really flat in himself and very disinterested in anything. My immediate thought was cushings.

I had him tested and had a set of general bloods run at the same time. Cushings test came back negative :-) and nothing could be seen on the bloods.

I started him on spillers original balancer (aswell as his normal feed) to make sure that he had absolutely everything he needed (even though was on a general vit and min supplement) and also introduced aloe vera to his feed.

He has now been on this new feed regime for 3 weeks and he is back to his normal self *sighs with relief!* :-)

Could be dehydration, this will make horses lethargic and off-form, exacerbated by this hot weather yet winter coats coming through. Many horses can become dehydrated during unusual weather changes. During an unusually warm day they can sweat unnoticed and become dehydrated. A horse that is chilled by a sudden cold spell may similarly not drink enough.

I am hoping that now he's on the antibiotics he'll be feeling a bit better. I'll keep an eye on him but its really starting to sound like it may be this time of year then!

It is blooming hot today!

I think its just that its coming to the end of a busy summer competing? My horses always feel a little bit flat (but still perform fine) - I always give mine time off completely over the winter. Mine will be off in about 2 / 3 weeks time (basically when the evenings get too dark to ride!) and I bring back into work beginning of Feb. They always come back full of beans ready for the next season and none have ever gone stale jumping or anything as a result.

I took mine jumping and it was awful, he was really flat and knocking poles which is not like him.
After reading this thread I think my horse is a bit dehydrated with the hot weather. I've been soaking his hay but he hasn't been drinking any extra water. Mine was fine on Monday, it's literally been today and yesterday that he is as flat as a pancake.
I think this unexpected hot weather is totally throwing them off :(.

One of mine has been a bit flat. I was going to get some bloods done, but I bought some NAF EnerG as a last resort and it seems to have sorted him out. I put it down to the warm weather and change of coat.

This thread has put my mind at ease a bit as my mare has been flat for a few weeks, have had the physio, farrier checked her feet, saddler next week and just started on red cell but perhaps it's just been the weather?
