Horse's first time?

The first time they are normally fine, its the 2nd or 3rd time, when they know what to expect that they can get silly.

I took a 5y.o TB mare to her first hunt (and mine!) on Saturday and she went nuts! Spinning round, going backwards, which she never normally does. 15mins on the lunge line before we set off sorted that out, though she was still unsure of herself but followed the pack and ended up enjoying it as much as I did!

Daisy broncked quite abit when we galloped but apart from that she was well behaved the rest of the time. We went for the third time on Sunday and she has really settled into it. If you don't know how your horse is going to react I'd say keep to the back amongst the slower folk until you know how they are finding it. The hardest thing for me was not taking a hold, learning that she will go much better if I let her go with the others.

my horse was great first time but i put a green ribbon in her tail this alerts other follower that you have a novice horse so they were very good as my horse was only 5 yrold so was green and kept me right

Mine was very excited, i kept him at the back, he was only 5 when i took him out for the first time, green ribboned up! Took him out again this year as a 6 year old and he settled quicker, still excited, put a few excited bucks in when galloping and stood well around hounds and loved it! They soon settle, just adapt the safety seat for the first hour and keep them out of the way if they are a menace!!

He's been 3 times now this season and has improved each one, they can't help getting excited, its only natural as everyone is!

Very true. My RID gelding was very good his first and second time - third time he was a nutter (he's a bit dim and it takes him a while to work things out!) Poor lad was cantering and couldn't keep up with horses walking - hell - talk about BOUNCY! I could have hired him out as a castle!

First time cool as a cucumber after that she was STRONG arms felt longer on my return....she was also giddy on the Sunday to do her light hack and stretch as I think she thought we were going again.....after the first time had to travel her tacked up cos she knew what was coming :D
