Hi, my friend is after a showjumper and I will be looking again after I've had my baby next year. She's heard good things about John and so have I, but just wondering if anyone has a horse from him and if they'd mind telling us what they are doing with that horse now, any results and how much they paid (if that is being too nosey can we have a rough ball park figure pretty please!)

There were a few of John's horses at my old yard and all were a bit quirky, so a bit about their temperaments would be useful too!

My friend got one from him [ well her last one was from him as well] He is a fantastic horse. She is jumping up to foxhunter and has had numerous wins this year. Sorry not sure what she paid .I think she had about £6000 to spend but have no idea if she spent it all

I would be intrested in this. I wanted to ask the same questions but wondered if i would be rude.

The one thing i did think was that as there is no prices is that i couldnt afford them and as they are all rather nice i probally couldnt ride one side of them.

I figured if it was rude to ask then no one would answer! I know one of the horses that is for sale through him at the mo and know they are good horses and he is very up front about them, I am just interested to hear what they are doing after they've left him.

I saw his A4 paged advert once in H&H and thought how reasonable his horses were. I believe the majority were in the £5 - £7K region.

You might also like to try http://www.jmsporthorses.co.uk Jock rode for Robert Smith and the Weinburgs and was sucessful in his field before going into dealing. I bought a smashing 7year old 17.1 Dutch WB with fantastic breeding from him in 2004 and have never looked back. He was under £5K. You can also go along with Jock to Holland/Belgium and he will let you meet his contact over there and you can try many horses in a day and decide which one you want and he will import over for you which works out a lot cheaper. His website isn't very good at the moment and is not regularly updated so it would be worth maybe giving him a ring. He goes abroad quite a bit so will always have other horses in stock that are not on the website. God forbid anything should happen to Bailey, but if it did Jock would be my first point of call and John my second.

John in very good reputable dealer. We've brought about 10 horses throught him and he is very straight talking. Very upfront and prides himself about matching the right horse with the right rider. We did buy one young one which turned out to be a bit quirkey which to be fair john didnt know as he came over from france he took him straight back without a problem! Cannot speak highly enough of him. There r not many dealers out there that actually have as many top quality horses as him!

Over the last 3 years we have had 13 horses from John or that we have swapped in with John.

I have paid from £4k to £35k so a big range!

From my experience he tells you everything he knows about them, obviously if they are from this country he has a bit more to say and you can find stuff out yourself. If he has something from France he will tell you everything he knows as often we pick them up within the first week of them being there.

He never wants paying before you take the horse, we are normally pestering him to get the money dropped off as he never stresses us.

Also if you don't get on he is more than happy to swap the horse with something else or if its within the first month he will have it back and money back etc.

My main horse atm is from him, who has jumped upto 1m40s last year but atm i am just doing between 1,05 - 1.20 as i can only ride once a week because of school and i need more practice to jump the bigger tracks!

I think he specialises in competition horses, but he found Fraser for us as a hack as a contact of M B Equestrian, who brought on and sold Beano. He is one of the nicest people I have ever met, and I'd certainly buy from him again.

he is a good bloke. knows his stuff ans sells as it is. he is a dealer so has to sell whats in the tin, and fit for purpose as per sales act! however if you oversell yourself as a rider then you might get overhorsed. not his problem. As with any new purchase work them hard, dont overfeed and take no nonsense! horses will try you out. give them an inch and they will take a mile. the first few weeks of discipline and work and instruction will build the partnership!

Sadly my experience with a horse from John Whinnett has been less than happy. Bought 16h 6yo ISH from his yard Dec 2012, 5-stage vetted, went lame February 2013. After time off, was put back in to work and suffered intermittent lameness until diagnosed to be navicular this summer. Obviously hard ground highlighted condition. Poor horse; heartbroken 16yo daughter. As they say, Buyer Beware!

Not sure how that was John's fault? You had the horse vetted, did bloods show that the horse had been buted to pass?
Very unfortunate but cant see how its his fault?

Agree with this.

And searching forums for 4 year old posts in order to comment on something that happened to you months ago....?

Indeed but one would hope that any horse bought from a reputable dealer for a specific purpose would last longer than a couple of months before going lame. This thread asked about John Whinnett; this is, sadly, our experience and is shared for the benefit and knowledge of other users. This will be my last posting on the matter but wish everyone who uses Mr Whinnett better success than us.

He has a good name around these parts. I always go to Jock Merriman. He is very good too. But John was also recommended to me at the time but hadn't anything suitable for me.

I would go to a dealer over a private sale any day of the week! Give Jock a shopping list and he will come back with your perfect horse.

Sorry but you are ridiculous and are blaming a reputable dealer for something beyond their control, with no proof it was there fault.

This thread is 4 years old that you bought up almost a year after you claim to have bought the horse.

Must remember to blame the weather man if it snows next February as I watch the weather today and they didn't mention it might snow.

How is John to blame for a horse that passed a 5 stage vetting then came down with something like that? Look how long it took for the vet to diagnose what was wrong with it? Ridiculous statement.

I have bought horses off John for years, wouldn't go anywhere else. If they don't match he won't sell it to you. He will tell you whatever you want to know, put you in contact with their old owners, deliver, pick up, part ex. The horses i have had have gone onto jump some big classes and are real winners. I have bought our last two ponies from him and they are superstars, he really is fantastic at his job. Can't rate him highly enough. Can PM me for any other information you may want to know.
