Am I the only one surrounded by lame and ailing horses at the moment? Don't know if it's the weather or what but every single horse I've ridden in the past month has had some issue or other. All 3 of the horses I have lessons on have various issues; backs and arthritic. My shares are out of action through stifle problems and arthritis. Yard I'm on is down to one sound horse out of 6 and I'm not convinced she's ok as she was lame before her shoes were replaced so its possible there's not something lurking underneath.
I've almost forgotten what it is to ride a fit sound horse. Even when I was at Cheltenham last week I spotted one horse who was definitely lame in the parade ring before the race. Or maybe I'm now getting paranoid.
Please let the weather get better soon :(

Haha this sounds like my winter. My 3yr old likes to hurt herself constantly! We have have had puncture wounds, abscesses, dead legs and hot legs and she has actually been on box rest for a total of 4 months this winter. We have also thrown 5 shoes as well because of the mud :( however we did manage 6 weeks of nice easy schooling and hacking before turning her away until when she is 4 in April! She has been out in the field for 3 weeks now (longest stint without injury) and I am constantly gripping wood she doesn't hurt herself again because I can not cope with anymore box rest haha!

TrasaM, get yourself back out here - there's plenty for you at the Ranch :)

Yippee! Will be back on the 3rd April ..hope it's not too hot. Look forward to riding Cherokee(sp?) again or anything that's not lame or ailing would be great:D

It's been such an awful year weatherise here and it's not one yet:(

It's been like that here for three years now. :o

Everything was going brilliantly. I had a full yard of seven horses, all in work including two of my own. Then I lost my lovely big ID gelding to colic. Next my mare had a catastrophic injury in the field and had to be retired. Next the cob developed kissing spines. Then another horse was out of work for months due to gastric ulcers. My replacement for my mare was found to have kissing spines. One of my liveries horses that was going brilliantly, suddenly stopped performing and was found to have arthritis of the neck, kissing spines, sacroilliac dysfunction and PSD :(. That alone was a terrible shock as he was so athletic and it all seemed to happen so suddenly. So we were down to one ridden horse. Then even the foal got in on the act and developed OCD of the stifle.

I have been back riding both of mine, but it is touch and go with my mare as even today she was not 100% and so I got off her right away. The mare with ulcers has gone bad again after cutting down her ulcer treatment. I had to get off her too after just ten minutes of rather 'uncomfortable' riding. I think I am losing my riding fitness as well because of all this. :o

Wagtail..my problems pale to insignificance compared to what you've gone through. Let's hope that things start to improve soon. Know what you mean about riding fitness. I've booked a 2nd lesson for this week just to keep me ticking over..but now I'm told we have snow on the way ..ho hum
