Horses - how much extra would you pay for a certain colour?

Gah! Someone beat me to it... My filly is only 8mo...... Could buy that one though.... Hang on.

mum, dad, fancy remortgaging??!?

There are quite a few buckskin warlanders, Abacus farms breed a couple each year :)

'Only' a grey, but will be interesting to see how this one turns out

I wouldn't pay more, but I have a soft spot for duns and roans so I'd probably be more likely to consider them in the first place ... and less likely to consider coloureds, but that's just personal preference!

Legrande would be a good example of this - he is stallion quaility through and through - his colour is the cherry on top. I don't know how much he cost, but he would be worth extra for his colour.

Would you pay more for a black horse? It's not a fancy colour, but it is eye-catching.

I have just bought my rising 2 Warmblood who is pure black apart from her facial marking, she is absolutly stunning but wouldnt pay more for her in terms of colour but for her breeding and temprement i have paid.

I'm probably going to have to get another equine @ some point (teenagers outgrowing ponies). Fortunately, my preference would (as always) be a chestnut mare.

The one I nearly bought was Anduril from Crack o noon. Gorgeous! Would link but on the iPad and is a pain to link stuff from youtube

My real preference is for a nice easy solid bay, but we seem to have 4 chestnut girlies :D

I do like a good chestnut. :) Plus with all the silly chestnut mare negativity, you can sometimes get alot of horse for your money.

Would pay over the odds for certain colours.......... For resale or not, if I could afford it, just for my pleasure.

If I won the euro..... I would have a massive estate overrun with ancient spotted andalusians, golden genets, dappled rose stallions..... No piebalds or skews though-make my eyes go funny.

Terrible romantic me but one may dream surely :)

Yes, I suppose that I've never had an open cheque when I've been buying horses. If I did, then maybe I would indulge in getting a quality animal and a lovely 'rare' colour.

RE Kasper, yes his colour was part of what attracted me to his advert. :o

I think it's *whispering as Naughty is beside me* because he is such a divine colour and I love his make up. I am not convinced that he is thick....

He got stuck in the same tree three times in half an hour.

I am giving the coloured in my sig away - never buy a coloured ;)

Oooh, I'll remember this - only steal or get given coloured horses. :p

I have often paid more for certain colours of broodmares and horses. I have always been happy to pay more as the colours are what I want. I searched for one type of mare in particular for about 18 months because I (like most diligent breeders) was not prepared to compromise on quality and yes there were other mares of these colours but they weren't the whole package that I wanted. I searched for another particular type of mare for a year and finally found her and bought her ... and then 6 months later someone came to me with exactly the same type of mare (which I also bought but ironically I paid peanuts for) I do find that the foals from these mares definitely generate much more interest from buyers. I do not however price my youngsters any more or less regardless of whether they are black with blaze and 4 white stockings or solid chestnut. Mine are priced based on conformation, type and bloodlines.

How much would I pay? Absolutely nothing. I like chestnuts, bays and greys the best so it isn't really relevant. Aren't I boring?! :p

I must be the only person left in the UK that doesn't think having a coloured horse (being piebald/skewbald in this instance) is the be all and end all. I wouldn't actively discriminate against any colour but would never, ever go out shopping for one specifically. The horses type, and ability to do the job I want are far more important to me and I wouldn't compromise on those just to get a fashionable colour.

ETS: I would actually discriminate against lots of colours. Including 'coloured' horses (my mother is old fashioned and said only the rag and bone man had them and it just stuck :o) palominos (yuck, they look like my little ponies) anything with white skin/blue eyes (more my little ponies). If it was perfect in every other way I'd have them but I'd really rather have a nice chestnut horse!

Um no.

Love greys. Have always been drawn to them . . . but I didn't buy Kali because he was a grey . . . I bought him b/c of his personality, his sweet character and b/c he was he first (and so far only) horse my DD (who shares him with me) ever galloped.

The fact that I am in love with his gorgeous silver coat is a bonus . . . I'd be as besotted with him if he were chestnut, bay, piebald, skewbald, roan, dun, etc. It's HIM I love.

This.

When we were horse shopping I tried every colour under the sun except palomino . . . and the one I wanted was Kal . . . wasn't b/c of his colour (although he is a very pretty boy) . . . it was his personality.

I would pay extra for an appaloosa just because I love their colouring but i'm also paying for their temperment since appaloosas are generally laid back and a pleasure to be around.
Im not keen on ordinary coloureds though, maybe those that are really different like overo. Love dun and palomino or champagne but would be hesitant to pay extra for their colour.

Even though I love appaloosa's, I wouldnt buy one unless it had talent to go far in what I wanted to do. I'm just lucky I found by boy who looks stunning (to me) and has a fair bit of talent to succeed in dressage hopefully!

Same :rolleyes::D
Right now a horse of any colour would do :( I love unusual colours and the genetics behind it particularly splash and sabinos atm and solid colours with wall eyes. I also have a thing for greys with dark manes and liver chestnuts mind you.
I will admit a well turned out well put together bay/black really does look stunning as there is nothing to detract from the horse underneath.

So no I would not pay more but I can understand why a breeder might. I think it is a shame we seem to have lost a certain amount of variety (QH's I have noticed have stunning variety and would be nice if this was put right and finally I would not turn down a horse or pick a horse purely on colour but I know which ones I enjoy researching and drooling over on the internet and pondering over the existence of certain colour/genetic combinations :o I am a sad case I know.
Latest discovery very pretty sabino palomino Lusitano stallion.
