Horses! I should be happy, but am a bit worried

I have posted many times about how Arch hates to be brushed, and how since I bought a pair of grooming gloves he's mellowed to the point that he has a scratchy spot on a back leg that he loves to have brushed. This was a source of great amusement for me.

Recently, this has escalated somewhat and now, brushing anywhere on his back legs, the back half of his tummy and even his ears (i.e. all the very worst areas previously) with ANY brush leaves him all gooey eyed, wobbly and grooming the wall / his headcollar / rug / haybar / anything he can get his teeth on. He nearly fell over yesterday as he spread is his back legs so far and then turned to indicate the spot he wanted brushing with the plastic curry comb I was trying on him to see if he'd tolerate (yes he'll tolerate it very well). I can't stress enough how quickly he'd have kicked me if I tried this a few months ago. I was even rubbing hard with the curry comb behind his ears last night - he usually tries to throw me against the wall if I go for his ears with anything other than my fingers.

I should be enjoying the fact he's enjoying it, but instead I'm worried there's something making him itchy and uncomfortable and that's why he's liking it, especially as he has melanomas....Or could he have had some problem for the last 12 years that has suddenly gone away? In which case I feel guilty I didn't address it sooner. I just called him Victor Meldrew and tried to be as diplomatic as possible with brushing. On the plus side, getting him clean is easier now!

Horses

...If anyone has any ideas for this sudden personality change please let me know so I can stop/start worrying properly. He's 21 if that makes any difference.

Theyr all a bit itchy this time of year because theyr losing their coats. You might find he's moulting madly.

I get that, but why this year for the first time in 12 years? He's not done it at this time of year before. He's fully clipped so hard to tell if he's moulting (although obviously I know his coat will be changing)

Pretty sure it's just his winter coat starting to come out, if he's anything like my share horse. (He nearly fell over yesterday, because he was so desperate for me to get at the itchy spot that he lifted his off hind too far up and out!)

He's probably been dealing with his itchiness himself previously, but now he's got you to do it instead!

You know when you haven't ever tried something, but still say you don't like it... and then one day you try it and LOVE it, I think this is exactly what is happening. For what ever reason, he's not liked being groomed (maybe a bad experience/association with it) but because you started with the grooming gloves, and then slowly moved onto brushes, he is now associating it with pleasure.

Does he groom/get groomed by other horses?

Just enjoy it, and not look into it too much!

^^this probably! Mine are kept in their own paddocks so don't groom each other. Kira has always been mad about scratchies and Millie is anti-contact of most kinds, UNLESS I give her the right kind of scratch and then she's all over me.

Just make sure you are doing it on your terms... otherwise you will find you get presented with whatever body part is currently itchy, in a kind of demanding way (says she who has been penned into a corner in the past :o)

Ha! I think I'm lucky - I just get a sorrowful look and maybe a gentle nudge from his nose, then he turns and looks very pointedly at the offending body part.

Yes.... Quite often Toby shoves his butt in my face and expects me to itch under his tail!!

I would think probably this ^^^ but also might be worth getting him tested for Cushings as he is 21.

Hopefully he's just happy discovering the perks of human contact but my horse became very itchy when fed alfalfa and also older horses are sometimes more susceptible to lice.

Probably nothing to worry about, just thought I would share my experiences just in case.

Thanks all - he does groom and get groomed (I never thought that that means he probably does like it!) he's a very social animal. He has no alfalfa or sugar in his diet (because we had to change my share horse's diet and it's easier to give them the same thing) I did wonder about cushings. I don't think it can be lice as he's fully clipped so surely we'd see them? He's always been quite 'vocal' on expressing pleasure / displeasure so I suppose it probably is just that.

Now if only he'd let me wash his melanoma riddled sheath without sedating him, life really would be easy! He did let me brush the outside with the gloves so maybe it's a step in the right direction!

Ha! He's already shoving his backside in my face when he comes in to his stable of an evening. His only problem is the grooming makes him stop eating and he's not quite sure which he prefers. He knows the food will be there after me so the grooming usually wins out.
