With "former child star Mark Lester" in the news all of a sudden Ive been reminded not of Oliver, but of my favourite film from my childhood, "Run Wild Run Free" in which he played a mute boy living on the moors. Even sitting at work now I get a huge lump in my throat thinking of the end! Does anyone else love this film, and which other horsey films stick in your mind?

God yeah I remember that film! Haven't seen it in donkeys years! My all time fave horsey films have to be "King of the wind" (Agba the mute with Sham the arabian), "The Black Stallion" and "Wild hearts can't be broken" a true story about diving horses in 50's america made by disney.

I only saw The Black Stallion Returns not the first one. I used to LOVE the books and would read and re-read them. Think there were about 12 or 14 in the series.

Not a horsey film, but I've always loved the black horse Harrison Ford rides in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In fact I think that's what inspired my riding holiday in Jordan last year!

I LOVED the black!!!!!

Yes I remember that film too as it starred the great John Mills as the man with the hawk. Didn't one of the ponies drown in a bog though, sad

Black Beauty is another horsey film of mine. Black Stallion too and what a fine looking beast he was. Have seen others since such as Seabiscuit and similar films along those lines.
Horse Whisperer is sad though. Always makes me cry at the beginning and then when you see the horse in the stable with the disfigured face

Also remember a series in the 80's was it called Silas? About a boy who got given a horse and was travelling around on it.

OMG i remember watching it as a kid and being in floods of tears when they were stuck in a bog. (Is that the same film??)
I couldn't remember the name of the film but for some reason i thought it was the name of the horse.

Hi, glad Im not the only one who remembers that film (ie Im not the only over 40 hee hee!). Yes its got John Mills in it, Mark Lester plays a boy called Philip who names the horse after him, the pony gets stuck in a bog but the little boy saves him at the end, and its very heart wrenching because I think its the only words he speaks in the film, "Philip wake up.....", sooooo sad. Got it on video, might get it on later!

Anyone seen Phar Lap?

Phar Lap is good but good old Aldaniti in Champions is better Opening scene makes me bawl, Aldaniti bounding along to the very moving theme music. Must go and watch it now!
Oh, also, Tir Na Nog which is an irish film, worth tracking down.

Oh yes I'd agree with Champions, got that on video, the horse is beautiful, I have seen Tir Na Nog but zillions of years ago and can't remember it now, I know I loved it though. Wonder if you can still get it? Have to go and hunt it down

Tir na nog was in Into the West, it is on Amazon, we bought a copy last year.
Fantastic film.

Phar Lap, Champions (have Kleenex handy!) and The Black Stallion are all fantastic.

Does anyone remember a fil called (I think) Danny? It was about a grey pony who was owned by a bratty kid who I think damaged his legs so thought him useless and gave him away to a girl who cared for him. In the end he wins a showjumping competition and they beat the bratty girl. I think the dad has a bet and wins some money to. Not a good description I know but I loved that film! I had it on video but cant find it, I've asked loads of people I know but no one has ever heard of it! Was it real or am I just crazy??

Yeeeee ha OH has sorted it he has ordered the video of Run Wild Run Free and will transfer it onto DVD

I LOVE HIM he sorts everything.

I am absolutely addicted to horsey tv shows at the moment. Watched Series 1 of Heartland last week. Now downloading series 2 and also something called Wildfire. Can't wait!!

The one which had me in floods was Phar Lap. I was close to tears watching the pony give up in Neverending Story (when they go through the Swamp of Gloom or whatever it was!).
