Mine is usually halfway up the field when I want to catch in to ride and and I have to walk all the way up then manoeuvre him past the ones who are by the gate wanting to come in. There's one in the group who always wants to come in whatever the time and mine who never does.

Very date info as was only riding a horse there in about 2006 - but Bury Farm in Edgewarebury certainly used to have decent turnout all year, and 24/7 in Summer.

I have ridden in London for more than 20 years. OH and I both needed to be in London for our work. Riding Schools that lacked turnout, turned their horses away for a month each summer. At others the horses were turned out overnight and came in during the day for lesson use or hacking. Both my shares have worked 6 days a week and been turned out overnight. There is a long tradition of keeping horses in cities, which continues with the Police and cavalry horses in use today. As a special treat I have ridden two or three times in Hyde Park which involves street work to reach the park, with buses, traffic lights and taxis all to be negotiated.
Riding on Rotten Row is a mega tourist experience but all round London you will find suburban riding schools, BHS registered , with good staff and nice horses.

hey

have previously posted re trying to find a yard in Essex / East London. Have found one but only offers 3 hours of turnout in winter, 24 hours in summer.

is this healthy? mine is a thoroughbred so i do like her to stretch her legs and burn off her energy. she has about 8 hours now. what does everyone else do / how do you manage?

Also - i have been so stressed out about moving again because my yard is so good and the difficulty of finding a yard I almost felt like giving up on horses altogether and moving back to London and restarting my life. I then went for a ride and thought how I'd be crazy to give it all up. Does anyone else have these types of fluctuations with their mood?

Shame we are South East and have 1 space up to 16.1hh daily turnout and facilities, but prob too far

I'm in such a dilemma. I moved to Bucks to be with my ex and then stayed here for a while whilst I tried to find a new job in LDN. Now I've got the job and found a place to move to... my list of pros & cons. Straw is a big thing for me because I refuse to pay the ridiculous cost of shavings and a lot of yards only allow shavings. I've done a pros and cons list, my yard is on the left and new yard on the right. Advice welcome!

Pros

  • Indoor & outdoor school
  • 6 hours turnout
  • Jumps to play with
  • Good instructor
  • Individual field
  • Auto waters
  • More social yard?
  • Overnight turnout in summer
  • Training / show centre short drive up the road
  • Can do straw
  • Reasonable cost

Cons

  • Less social yard
  • Limited jumps to play with
  • 3hrs turnout in winter
  • Small group turnout – more injuries?
