Horses in our out in bad weather?

I would normally say out no matter what, but I shut the gate to the field today so mine are in the yard and barn, they still have plenty of room to move about but it's beastly and the river at the bottom of my fields is actually in the fields

My ex racer is out 24/7 come rain, shine, wind, snow.. She's rugged well and always has hay.. I bring her onto the yard for her feeds, she scoffs them down then waits rather impatiently to be put back out, she loves being out :)

If it were down to me, mine would be out in all weathers. But the other livery at our place brings hers in every night, so I bring mine in too to stop her pacing at the fence all night.

Shy would be HORRIFIED if i turned him out at the moment, in a blizzard. He has this fab look of disgust he puts on, whilst standing at the gate and muttering into his beard... he is such a useless native now. Bringing him in when there is snow around is something else - he's in such a hurry, I'm literally skiing beside him ;)

I must get a video of him when he's been turned out in weather he hates - when I go to get him in, it's full on gallop, bucking, farting, and a polite "did you want me ?" when he gets to the gate. I adore that pony.

Out 24/7 by their own choice, we have a fantastic big and very warm field shelter and they never use it, total waste of space! vant say I ever noticed them sheltering under the trees either they just tend to huddle together by the fence waiting for feed and fuss!

Out 24/7, just make sure they have plenty of hay in their feeder to keep them warm. Sometimes they shelter under the trees but usually either grazing or huddled by the hedge sleeping.

2 are out 24/7 at home. 1 in livery has been in today and will be in tomorrow on YO's instructions as the fields are too wet. Not complaining as it has been the first time this winter we couldn't turn out.

I try to keep him out as much as possible with haylage in the field but he is fully clipped so I have to play it by how he looks and feels. Today it is absolutely vile, pouring with rain, gale force winds and freezing temperatures outside so have brought him in. I wouldn't want to be out in that mudbath, why should he?

My 2 are out 24/7 but have access to stable and huge field shelter. They are favouring the field shelter a LOT in this bitter wind...

I prefer mine out, but when the weather is bad, the TB stands at the gate. This morning I put them out while I mucked out and they only moved about 20 yards into the field - when I went to get them in, I called them and they came flying back down to come in!

Mine hates out and if it's wet or cold:mad: she stamps her foot at the gate!

I see little point in leaving her stood in the ditch she has created at the gate, so in she stays, wrapped up and eating her net. It's also a chance for her to have a spa day, which she loves.

Each to their own.

All mine live out. My new one has just began living out 24/7 as well (after slowly introducing turnout over the last few months as he was kept in most of his life). They have access to stables (I just leave doors open) so they come and go as they like. Perfect IMO.

My ex racer hates being in - he bangs at the door and Neighs to get out! However he comes in overnight in really wild windy and rainy/snowy weather. Most of the time though, adlib haylage and thick cosy rugs keep him happy!

Out during the day.
Mine want to be wherever the hay is. Currently, we're not allowed to put hay in the fields, so the cob is pretty disgusted at being turned out. My mare is not so food orientated and loves to play with her mates.

When they were on a yard where round bales of hay were in the field, they were much happier out in all weathers.

mine are out, as the mare won't go into a stable these days, we have a field shelter for the first winter in 10yrs and they are living in it! but they do pop out occassionaly, id rather than than lock her in and stress her out, which is what used to happen!

in now! as of today - mine will just stand at the gate - theres nothing for her to eat outside and the fields are covered in snow so whats the point??

she's happier in anyhow luckily :)

They stayed in today. Weather is horrendous here. Absolutely horrendous. Power keeps going on and off etc.
Every 40 minutes or so they'll come to their stable doors, get slapped in the face with snow and wind, and then retreat to the back of their stable again!
They were on shavings so after mucking them out today I put a few cakes off straw down each. I have some very snuggly ponies!
Took them out today 1 by one as I mucked out and they all practically barged their way back in!

My 2 are usually put during the day and in at night all year but when the bad weather comes (snow, gales, floods etc) they get a jammy and munching day!

If the weather is really bad, then they only out for a few hours. Otherwise they are out all day and in at night. In fact they stand waiting at the gates waiting to be brought in. Given the choice our Fjord would go out or 30 mins then pop back into his stable for a while, then back out, then back in and out and in and....you get the picture

Mine live out generally but I did get them in tonight, I had to call them for ages, they were in no hurry! They will go out again first thing and I will decide tomorrow if they come in or stay out. They have big bale haylage in the field so feed isn't a problem but the feeble one doesn't like getting wet.

Out 24x7 in the summer but rest of year because of grass sickness high risk they are in at night. Except a couple of days a year, where the conditions are just too extreme or snow drifts too high to get them out. Like today. But to be fair we are on a hill on the edge of the cairngorms. No windbreaks as they dont grow up here and anything man made gets lifted and flung :-)))

So today they were in (for only the second day this winter) all day.

However they are in an airy mini barn with windows on the outside -and when they have to be closed in extremes like today they have windows in the middle so horse can always see out.

It's been snowing for 5 days solid tho so I don't think we are doing too badly.

Big old chap also gets snow colic from eating too much snow so I have to be careful
