Horses in overnight

Mine usually stay out at night all winter apart from the worst of weather but with it being so wet the last 18 months my grazing isn't where it usually is at this time of year so I think they might have to come in at night in January. I'll probably only stable the gelding and let the mares have the run of the yard.

Anybody switched routine yet?

Mine are still out overnight. I prefer this routine immensely as it makes life so much easier but my big horse prefers being in overnight in the depths of winter - much to his companions annoyance.
I’m going to have mine in overnight over the weekend in case of fireworks but I’m wondering if the weather holds up I might try and keep them out after this …
I won't put mine out at night anymore regardless of the season. Liveries can if they want but didn't

mine swapped a couple of weeks ago, the field just can’t cope with them being out so much and i’d rather than have a few hours everyday than be stuck in through winter! they stay in when most other peoples are out, because unfortunately for diva, lily stands at the gate shouting for someone to take pity on her and bring her in🤣

this is the first winter i’ve had with them actually being out as both were rehabbing last year, so definitely learning when i should’ve been resting some of the field! YO is going to roll it and muck spread as soon as the weather will allow though. i’d much prefer them out overnight for as long as possible

I swapped mine over at the beginning of October to try to preserve the grazing as long as possible.

@ Davesmum I have three on straw in the summer and get away with skipping out and then doing a dig out at the weekend as they are only in for a few hours during the day. However much as I try I find the beds are so much wetter with them being in longer in winter that I have to dig them out every day :(

Mine only want to be in for food, there's still plenty of grass but it's obviously not filling them up these days. Can't feed in the fields so tried them in for 2 when it was wet and they were bloody furious by the morning despite having hay left.

It seems they only want to come inong enough to fill their bellies then want to be back out. So I either stay and watch them eat for a couple of hours or come home and go back later.

They usually come in mid November or whenever the weather gets nasty.

Tris has been in overnight for a few weeks - his pen is getting pretty muddy. While I want him out as much as possible, he can't go on the grass (or he could if I was happy with him continuing to have low grade laminitis..) and I'm not sure how much he sleeps out there with the ground as it is - he normally comes in with a clean rug so hasn't been rolling much.

Well my plan to have the horses in overnight lasted one night 😂. I decided Friday night was the night. Long story short the hunt were meeting Saturday morning so I then had to do a complete switchover to get them out at the crack of dawn, bring them back in which I’m glad I did because the hounds came across our land 🙄 without permission and then the went back out last night. They seem happy and the weather is mild enough. It probably means I’m going to have. A bit of a grass shortage come early next year but I’ll have to tackle that problem when I get to it.

Mine are in at night until after the fireworks and then I’m hoping to be back to out 24/7 unless is rains horribly. Mine are fine with snow but Mim doesn’t like heavy rain.

Ours are living out 24/7 and are even reluctant to stand I the shelter to eat at. They are making sure that their bums stick.out. I can onlythink that because it is so mild they feel too hot in the shelter.

Mine decide for themselves, gates from the fields into their stables are left open and they just come and go as they please. They usually stay out overnight once their hay is eaten. They spend more time in when it's warm to get away from the flies, it has to be really bad for them to come in over winter other than to have hay.

My rough plan is they will stay out to the second week in January .
They come in around eight get a snack get ridden and they have been in to five thirty but we are bringing that forward gradually it’s three atm .
We are feeding no forage except a bit of straw chop if they are in a long while .

Out until I have had enough! Usually around Christmas time, unless weather is awful before. I do bring her in for day on weekends when I'm off. They have got a shelter though.

Ours moved onto winter grazing yesterday and will now be in at night. Although I’m moving them end of month to two different yards. One 5-day livery in at night all year round and one with optional 24/7 t/o all year round but has own stable to use as much as you want to.

Although summer was pretty wet, it's been dry with us for a few weeks so they're still out 24/7 and miraculously, still on the summer field. We planned to move them at the beginning of October but as Wiggy's on box rest and in a little pen in the field which gets moved every few days, it was obvious that the grass he was stripping in those pens was re-growing pretty quickly so we left them in there. There are only 4 in the field this winter instead of 7 (and Wiggy's still in the pen on dry days only until Christmas) so the grass hasn't been touched and there are fewer of them to eat it when they do get in there so we're hoping they can stay out at least until the start of December. We're moving them to the winter field this weekend, just because the summer field is further away and a pain to get to in the dark.

I guarantee, as soon as Wiggy's allowed out it'll p155 down for 3 months.

Similar with us quite dry at the moment so I’m keeping them out until the weather breaks. I did have to move them off the summer field before going away on hols start of October so they’ve had slightly too much grass but the ground is looking well and I don’t fancy mucking out yet 🙈😂
