Hello Everybody,

I'm in a sticky position...

We rent, and the non horsey farmer thinks we can turn horses out on wheat fields (fields where he has used for farming). There is basically just green wheat growing on them, no grass what so ever. The field next to it is a rape field, so that has 'leaked' over into the wheat field so there is a corner in the field where there is a lot of rape flowers..... There hasn't been horses on these fields before.

Am I wrong in not turning the horses out in that field??? He thinks I'm just silly....

Please help.

Well, it's not up to him really is it?

You want to turn the horses out on grass - so just ignore him, and turn them out on grass.

Actually I'll go against the grain here, when we bought our land it had a crop of wheat seeded on it and we discussed with the farmer and the (equine specialist) vet what to do with the horses as we were desperate for grazing. We could have had it all ploughed and re-seeded with grass but then there was nothing for the horses at all so we put the horses out on the wheat whilst most of the field was re-seeded. I kept a very careful watch as the Section A runs to fat and can get laminitis from over feeding but we had no problems whatsoever.

If there is no alternative to the wheat then I'd just get on with it, but strip graze if you are worried about their intake being too great.
