I keep my ponies at my own field, just me and my other half and our crew

. I often wonder if its better this way or better at a yard where you can meet other pony/horse owners. ? How is it for you?

Personally I like a livery yard.I enjoy the social side a yard can give and help on hand if needed or someone to do horses in the unsual event I/OH/daughter can't manage up.We are on diy yard but folk will help out if asked and they are able to.Sometimes think about own place when yard politics get a bit much(not too often on present yard thankfully).A friend went from practically her own place to a yard and said she prefers yard life as offers better facilities than just field/stables at home and enjoys the company.
Don't think one ways better than other tho its down to individual preference

I have no choice but to keep our pony (and maybe one for me soon) at a yard. I do dream of having my own place for convinience (its a 20 mile round trip to ours) and the thought of being able to potter out in my pj's to turn out and then go back to bed for a bit...lol.
However I would really miss (and my 13 year old daughter particularly) the other owners and the help if needed.
Best I suppose would be to have my own yard and take all my friends with me.

i kept mine at my own yard since my very first pony
and enjoyed it as i didnt have anyone interfering telling me im doing things right or wrong.....for eg. the debate on whether to use draw reins or not. just small stuff like that.

and then i moved to a competition yard when i went to work there and i felt like i kind of lost my independance in looking after my own horse. but still enjoyed the extra facilities, help if i had a day off, and other peoples company etc
im now at a different yard and love the facilities, new friends etc
however im debating whether to move the whole set up back home again
im trying to weigh up the pros and cons of both

I did livery yards for a while and am now much happier renting my own place. It's nice and quiet where I am; no yard politics and bitching; I arrange the grazing to suit me and my horses; everything how I like it

I ride out with my mum or friends so still have the social side. I would love to have more facilities, but we do ok

Ive always had mine at home. The only thing I think I miss is not having facilities like an outdoor school! Otherwise, I compete every weekend and am a member of a few clubs etc. so socially, I dont find it a problem!

I keep mine on a quiet livery yard, so sort of best of both worlds. I can do whatever I like with him, and can avoid speaking to anyone, but I have their thousands of acres to ride on and nice new stables!

when i was in my teens i wanted to be on a yard as i missed out on the social scene. however ive since been on a few yards and didnt really like them. i prefer to be on my own

We keep ours at home, with the obvious disadvantages of lack of school and noone to help or share chores with, or swap with. I wouldn't do it any other way now though from choice; it is lovely to be able to do things exactly as you like.

I love having the horses at home! I can wander up the field in nightshirt & wellies & it's far easier to get ready for comps, etc.

I've tried a few yards on & off before we got our own place (altho for the vast majority of the time I've kept mine on my grandad's farm with no other horses), but I don't like the politics or the rules or having to get on with so many people, some of whom are distinctly ???

The only drawback is having no-one to ride with, but now that o/h comes with me on his mountain bike, that's that fixed too.

Don't get so lonely for other horse people to talk to now I've got you lot!!

I had mine at home when I first got him, but moved him onto a yard when he didn't settle on his own. He is now much happier, and although I ride out alone most days, it perks him up to have someone to hack with a couple of times a week.

I do tink it depends on the yard though; The first one I was at was at was rubbish- they wouldn't even give him his feed ..somedays. Needless to say we moved. Yard No2, had amazing facilties etc but I didn't really love it, then it closed, and now I'm at yard no3 which is perfect!

I now wouldn't bring him home unless OH took up riding so he had a companion, and I had someone to ride with.

i kept my horse in a livery yard before having them at home, and the livery yards i was at were mostly under 16yrs olds with their horses, ponies so i felt alienated anyway as im a lot older than them so when we got a chance to have our own place i love it, i had to buy another horse to keep my horse with company as he needs equine company all the time, now the problem is that he cant bear to be parted from my mare so i dont know what i will do when i want to start riding her in the summer, downside not having somewhere to ride all the time, has to be decent weather, as for any problems i have i have a great lady who looks after my 2 when i need her and i also do stable management with her as im doing my exams so at least i have the back up that you would normally get in a livery yard

I keep mine at home with me. I love hacking alone but do meet a friend once a week or so for a nice long hack and a natter. Suits me just fine. I think if I had company all the time, I could be the type of person who'd find myself anxious if I suddenly had to ride alone. This way, I'm well used to it.

I also think it does my horse wonders as alot of horses are less than happy about hacking alone. Patches couldn't care less.

I always wanted my own yard til i moved where i am now and certainly when i retire still do. But I work in an all male department, my husband is a man, (obviously!) and it's the only female company I get so its the only place i can have a bloody good moan about him. Although it's expensive I think its worth it, otherwise I'd be spending money down the pub moaning about him there!! (it also offers a useful escape from annoying inlaws and various offspring)

i currently keep my horse at a livery yard but want to move him to a field closer to me as i dont drive and the livery yard is a fair walk (especially in the rain!!!)

i think i will miss the social side of being at a livery yard as we do have a laugh and there are no real rules, just aslong as the horses and us lot are happy!:D

however, i will have my sister to ride with still and might meet up with the old crew now and again so i doubt ill be that alone!!!
