Serious collision in Hagley

Tuesday 26 June

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) was called to assist at a road traffic incident in Hagley late last night (Monday 25 June) that left one man injured and several horses dead.

The incident is believed to have involved a number of separate collisions along the A491 in Hagley, just near the Four Winds pub.

The Service was alerted to the incident at midnight by police already at the scene, and fire crews from Kidderminster and Bromsgrove attended. They worked alongside paramedics to release a man from his car, after it left the road and overturned. The casualty was lifted from the car and treated at the roadside before being taken to hospital by land ambulance.

Station Commander Dan Quinn from HWFRS said: “We understand that the collision involved some horses, believed to have escaped from a nearby field. As we arrived, the car was on its side in a field with the driver inside it, and we had to use specialist stabilising equipment to secure the vehicle in order to reach the casualty inside.”

He confirmed that there had been at least one other incident along the same stretch of road just before midnight last night, and that three horses had died.

Police are investigating.

There is a field further up the 491 that has/had a large number of coloured cobby types in, the whole area of Clent/Belbroughton is horse land.

Very sad for all concerned and I hope the car driver recovers quickly.

Very sad for the driver, hope he gets better soon. It must be like driving into a brick wall if you suddenly hit a horse in the dark. There wouldn't be any time to take evasive action.

I do think that land adjoining dual carriageways/motorways should have standards for fencing and should be inspected periodically. Much safer for the horses and the drivers. It would stop irresponsible owners and YOs keeping horses in with a bit of baler twine and some saggy barbed wire (not saying thats the case here but you see it a LOT).

It's the roomsley turning as I usually head through belbroughton from home to work. Quite livery based on either side. Can't think of really bad fencing but who knows. Sad for all concered
