I have had to leave my horse out tonight due to the fact that i have no one that can him out in the morning as i have a very early oppointment at the hospital with my son.He is kept at my mum and dad farm but they are not very horsey and he is only a two year and is 16.2hh and did not want to ask them.I have just seen the weather and it is going to rain quite alot in the evening so i am now worried about him.Do the people on here leave their horses out at night and are they always ok.Silly post really but i do worry alot.

My yearling is out (rugged though as it's only 7 degrees outside) and pony is out naked.

4 yr old is in but she always is

Everything at our yard is out

- have been since Feb and will all stay out until Nov/Dec. They range in age from 5 - 35+ (the five year old was born here and has never been stabled overnight until this winter and is a TB

) and are all unrugged.

I'm sure he will be fine - and less work for you to do tomorrow!!

Most horses live out 24/7 in summer - does yours have any special problems that it can't? A bit of rain doesn't matter. Horses coats are fairly waterproof - even when they look drenched if you shove your fingers right in their coats their skin is warm and dry. You know yourself you are being silly...we all worry about our 'babies' but worrying that they can't cope with being out iat night in summer - yes even if it rains - is tsking things a bit too far.

You can tell I'm not in favour of all ths modern 'wrap them in cotton wool' style of horsekeeping that seems to be in. :-)

Mine are out tonight with lightweight turnouts on.
Even if he is cold and shivery, assuming he is in good health he should be OK. Try not to worry about him on top of taking your son to hospital tomorrow, thats stress you dont need

Don't worry, my boys are always stabled at night and out during the day all year round and my friends think I am nuts and should have a mucking out break during summer lol! So I took the plunge when the weather was nice two weeks ago and started leaving them out the odd night here and there and they are quite happy. They have their lightweight rugs on and are out every night now and all is well. Don't worry they'll be grand

Horse should live - mine lives out 365 days of the year and completely unrugged from April to October

I appreciate people get worried but they are horses at the end of the day.

Yes i am being silly and i know it is better for them, but i have only had him three months and i do worry.I worry more then i ever did as i lost both my two homebred horses in december and i just am very paranoid now about things going wrong.

Is he out on his own? If so is he used to being out on his own?

I wouldn't worry about the rain at all. My yearling is out without a rug at the mo.

My horse comes in at night for 2 reasons, firstly he can be a sh1t to catch and comes in on his own terms, so I like it to be a regular routine for him to come in. Secondly we don't have a huge amount of grazing so we alternate day and night grazing.

If he was reliably catchable he would be out 24/7 over the summer!

My 19 year old pony lives out 24/7 as she has copd she used to live out without a rug but where i keep her now there is no shelter in her field she weares a rug. Also i need to stop bleaching by the sun as we qualified for the area finals of the vetran horse sociaty olympia finals and want her to stay her lovely liver chestnut colour and not go bright orange!! Not that we stand any chance of getting to olympia. I think horses cope well unruged its us humans who are wimpy on there behalf.

my german wb's live out 24/7. youngsters without rugs even in the winter. I only stable horses that are total wousses when the weather is bad.
I wouldn't worry, horses are designed to live out.

All mine are out 24/7, even in winter they are out as much as possible with access to shelter - I have 3 TB's as well as my friesians and a bunch of youngsters they are all fine - it is far healthier to keep horses out all the time they are not really designed to live in a tiny cage. My stallions are in in winter and out for most of the day but it is only because we don't have enough paddocks in winter - I save as many as possible for spring we are on sandy clay so they get trashed with all the rain. If I had more land they would be out all year!!

Mayflower has picked up on the most valid issue here. It's not the fact of the horse being out at night that you should be worrying about. I am sure he/she will be fine. But it's the possibility that he/she might not used to being turned out alone. Being out alone - especially if your horse isn't used to it - could lead to the horse fretting or worse (sorry, don't mean to be a scaremonger here).

Highinterest's message doesn't make it clear whether the horse has company or not, or is used to being alone.

My five (3 Arabs, 1 Anglo and 1 TBX) all live out in all weathers and haven't worn their rugs for the last three months or so. But they are NEVER alone.

Anyway, I hope all went well last night and that your son is okay at the hospital.

All mine live out 24/7 365 days a year unrugged. My 12 day old foal coped fine in the torrential downpours last Friday so don't worry yourself.

mine are out 24/7 without rugs and no feed!
one is a lightly built 3/4 tb and the other is a middleweight tb x id.

mine have always lived out from March onwards at least, including a lot of tbs, broodmares and youngsters.

horses don't dissolve in rain as far as i know!

Thankyou for all your posts and comments some of which were very funny.Well he was ok after a while my mum popped out a few times and he was not very settled walking up and down the fence then trotting the cantering for a while, she last checked him at 10p.m and he was down the bottom of the field grazing have come up to do him now and he is ok.He is in a field on his own but can see the other horses in the next field. For the people that asked about my son he did very well at the hospital thankyou for the interest.Well now i know he is ok out all night you never know it might stay that way till the autumn unless the weather gets very bad.
