Horse's legs swelling up in stable, should I be worried?

My horse injured himself last year, pulling his suspensory ligment. The vet advised box and then field rest followed by a gradual return to work. This we did, he spent the winter and most of this year living in a field so he could mooch about gently and his leg healed well, he is now back in full work (though not too strenuous as I am always paranoid that his leg might go again). From the field he was staying perfectly sound and managing long 2-3 hour hacks with a fair bit of cantering on good going.

I recently moved him to a new yard with more facilities. One of the yard rules is that the horses have to be stabled for several hours each day so as to preserve the grazing. I am worried because when I go to see him after he's been in for several hours (~10) his front legs are often quite swollen, eg. his windgalls have filled up. He has always had windgalls but wandering round the field seems to keep them down, but after he's been in the ones on his front legs particularly are very big and hard (his backs aren't so bad). His injury was to one of his front legs so I don't know if it is related, could the standing in be impeding the circulation to it? He is sometimes quite stiff aswell when I get him out of the stable which he never was when in the field 24/7. When he comes in in the mornings after being out all night his windgalls have gone back down again.

So basically I am wondering if he needs to be out all the time to keep the circulation going into his legs. I have been being very carefull to walk him for ages when I get on him to warm him up and he is not lame when I do this. But last week I loose schooled him after seeing him walk stiffly out of his stable and he was abit lame infront. I haven't ridden him since, I am thinking of giving him a few weeks off to see if he comes right and then calling the vet if not. This is probably a very wafflely post sorry! Does anyone have experience of this sort of thing? Do you think it is his old injury flairing up or could it be something else?

Hi, I think it could be the old injury flaring up, sounds like you need the vet to check it out.

Try putting your post in 'Vets' there are some very knowledgeable people in there!

Thanks, I have just put this in vets. We're not doing particularly much more riding though I did jump him last week for the first time. I am wondering if this may have caused it to flare up

How old is he and what is his workload at the moment?

This can be quite common in older horses and even though 24 hour turnout is possibly the best, as you know it isnt always possible.

As long as the injury hasnt flared back up then I wouldnt be concerned about windgalls and you could always bandage his legs for a while whilst he is in to keep any swelling down.

He might have looked lame because he had gotton stiff, a bit like me first thing in the morning, but I would think he might just need more time to loosen up after being in for a while or work him when he comes in off the field and see if you notice a difference, if you do that is probably it.

He is 10 so not really old. He works about 6 days a week mainly schooling or hacking and sometimes lunging. Schooling up to an hour, hacking more like 2 hours. We do quite a bit of trotting and cantering on hacks, not just pootling about! He is fairly fit though so had been coping fine with it.

The lameness/stiffness does seem to wear off after a few minutes of walking around.

Then I wouldnt worry and just do as above and maybe bandage in the stable to help the swelling, ride from the field or give him time to stretch out and loosen up if riding from the stable and add a bit of something in a feed to help the joints.

Be aware of the ground you are trotting and cantering on as well as this wont help the windgalls or the stiffness and his old injury. The ground has been hard lately. 2-3 hour hacks with lots of trotting and cantering is quite strenuous on the old pins

My mare damaged a tendon a good few years ago (She's forever in the wars!)
Her legs tend to swell when stabled, but soon 'deflate' after 5/10 mins of walking. I bandage her legs whenever stabled and this keeps the swelling down.
