Hi everyone! Does anyone else have the problem of their horse's mane falling out due to winter combo rugs?? It's so annoying! :( My horse gets turned out everyday 8-4 and he wears a full neck heavyweight rug and he was fine until about 3 weeks ago and now he has a section of mane that is nearly all gone and the rest is starting to thin out! Any advice would be greatly appreciated on how to stop it! I have Mega-tek hair regrowth serum which I put on at night when he is stabled and when he's in he wears a stable rug with no neck to try and let his mane 'breathe' a little! I don't want him to be bauld but cautious about turning him out with no neck cover seeing as he is grey and the DIRTIEST horse ever....ooh and he'd get cold? :P Looking forwards to any tips you might be able to offer me! Tishko :) x

well..... i hope im not speaking too soon but ive had this every year and came to the conclusion the only answer was no neck cover. However this year with a bossys bib mane cover mine has been ok!

I have found the same with 2 of mine that wear necks. Both have a 8 ior 9 inch section of mane missing entirely. Dressage will be fun with that gap.

NSN - I did look into trying to find some kind of bib but the gap that is missing is further up than I think most bibs would reach?? Will have a look at Bossy Bibs :)
YasandCrystal - I am dreading trying to plait it up for winter dressage comps, scared it will all just fall out and then he'll have to re grow a whole mane lol!

Mine lost his some of his last year so i gave up putting one on at night half way through winter and it helped. This year he has hardly worn a rug because he isnt in work and unclipped so i have a very nice mane (if a little long, will trim it when he is in work) I think that when they are in the stable take it off, i will only use a neck to keep the worst of the mud off and keep the bad weather out, in his stable he wont need it. He coped fine without a neck and he was fully clipped out. Also if they get too hot the mane seems to come out more so might we worth only putting on a thin neck rug if you still want one on.

simple answer don't use rugs with necks :) lol mine is fully clipped out and never wears one and is a complete mud monster - sadly means more time spent grooming but can highly recommend you invest in a cactus cloth or grooming block :) my reply is completely unhelpful sorry lol

My boy has quite a long mane, and wears a full neck rug. His mane is constantly plaited ( I re-do them once every 4 weeks or so) and this prevents the hair being rubbed out or getting all tuggy :)

My horse is 35 and i've put up with him losing half his mane during the winter for years, WELL no more, I purchased a chest/mane protector from Bossy's bibs and its fantastic ! he has growth where it had been totally rubbed away so he looks like he's got a mane all the way down now, if you find them on facebook you will see as I've posted a few pics.

BEST THING I HAVE EVER BOUGHT !

No neck rugs in the stable
Detachable neck rugs in the field
Don't let them get too hot
Wipe down the inside of any neck covers and spray with coat shine

Et voila. Full mane.

Fig doesn't have any combo rugs now and doesn't wear a neck in the stable (unless just been bathed or really baltic) and he has a full thick mane for his golf ball dressage plaits.

Rambo rugs have been answer for my horse. Full mane throughout winter. Think its cos they don't have the centre seam down neck that more other rugs have & that rubs the mane. Or thats what I foind with my boy

Thank you for your replies everyone!!

I bit the bullet and turned him out in a heavy weight T/O with NO neck cover for the last three days and to my surprise he has been coming in nice and warm and more importantly (:P) relatively clean!! -which is saying something seeing as he manages to get mud absolutely everywhere even when he has a rug on! ;)

I have looked into the Bossy Bibs and they look super maybe I'll try pick one up! Ooh interesting that the plaiting has worked - although don't think my boy's mane is long enough to be plaited as it's kept pretty short! :)

My only concern about him being turned out with no neck cover is that he would get cold as he's fully clipped but he seems to be doing okay and he even got rained on yesterday and was still quite happy out in the field!

Let's hope that my problem is solved and what has fallen out grows back so he too can have nice golf ball plaits - thank you everyone!

Well there are occasions if the horse has a reason for the mane to fall out. A neck stops mane coming out when horse rubs on trees as its more likely to come out on tree than the small amount under neck cover.

Not always simple answer as explained in my above post, it depends if there is a reason for weak roots in the hair or the bacteria.

I have the snuggy hoods turnout hood with no head ( I don't like head ones as I worry) so it is essentially just a neck cover BUT it hasn't taken out any mane. It is the best thing I have bought all year

if you need a hood to keep them clean but struggle losing mane I would suggest trying it. You can sometimes find them on fleabay. I am a total convert, it has done me proud!

I don't mean under a neck rug, I mean instead of a neck btw. Didn't make that clear.

Yip - I have just the same problem, and as their manes finally grow out by November time, its time to put their neck rugs back on ! And its always the same couple of inches that fall out. Usually the part of mane you want your best plaits and thats most visible to a judge !
I find that using canter mane/tail spray does help, as it makes the neck part of the rug slide more due to the slipperyness of the mane.
Also simply not using a neck rug, as others have suggested.

Make sure the rug isn't too tight around the neck when he puts his head down to graze. I used to have this problem with my pony. I couldn't understand it as the rug seemed to fit him perfectly but then I realized that when he put his head down it was actually quite tight. I solved this problem by adding a piece of strong elastic to attach the top clip to at the front of the rug (I hope that makes sense). Hey presto his mane has grown back :)
