Horses NEEDED in GLOUCESTERSHIRE

I studied the 2 week 'Introductory Course' at Monty Roberts Farm in California, last November, and in preparation for the exam I am looking for horses to use the concepts I learnt. So if anyone has or knows of horses, feel free to message me.

I would really appreciate if anyone knew of horses, I could learn from, as I am having difficulty finding like minded people, who appreciate what Monty does, without people scoffing at it

I just want to learn about horses, and be in a learning environment without all the arrogance of "I already know this"... Aren't we ALL learning something new, surely we can't know everything about horses, that's the amazing thing about these animals, they teach you something new everyday... That's what I believe....
 
There are some ih RAs near Gloucestershire that you could contact for some local advice, they give super riding lessons and courses too, might be a useful link for you as your are right in their neck of the woods, it's Adam and Nicole, sometimes I think they may take on work experience but not sure how often this is an option, you can find their details through the intelligent horsemanship website, hope this helps,
 
I have a mini donkey you could have a go with - he's 2 and starting to test his boundaries!! :D

What are you looking to actually do with the subject horses, it's not really that clear?
 
As part of the course, I have to submit videos of me using the Dually Halter (backing up, leading), Join Up in the field/ arena or roundpen, and trailer loading. So I need to find horses to do these with :)

Trying to find horses that are easy access within the Gloucestershire area...

Not sure if I would be able to video submission of me working with a donkey, but no doubt it would be a very educational :)

Hope that clarifies things, and someone can help...

I'm afraid it's only with horses, but I'm sure your donkey could teach us a thing or two! :)

I just noticed you are in the Gloucester area.... Do you know of anyone who needs a hand with their horses... barging horses, horses that wont load, that I could potentially help, and then I would also be able to submit videos for my course?

If your looking to help people with their horses you might have better response if you are able to explain your own experience and credentials other than an introductory 2 week course, if your looking for more education and experience to support your learning then I'd really recommend Adam and nic or any of the ih gang for some uk monty friendly people, there's tons of courses, ras are often open to help students get experience or steer them towards the right courses/lessons good luck Rosie
 
Zeburdy, try putting a post on the Gloucestershire horse riders Facebook group, it's very popular and sure someone will be a willing candidate from there!
All of ours bar the donk are rather well behaved and would be probably far too obliging!

And I'm not even being sarcastic, dead serious. If you can crack him you can crack any horse.
 
Only an irresponsible person will let you anywhere near horses after a '2 week Introductory Course' - you could do irreparable damage to a horse's training.
And, perhaps more importantly, horses are large, potentially dangerous animals who could do irreparable damage to you.
There's a great danger in your advertising like this - that if you are as novice as your original post makes you sound, you could be used by unscrupulous people as a 'crash test dummy'.
I don't mean to hurt your feelings, but you do have to be careful.

I agree. Your posts don't make you sound knowledgable or inspire any confidence in you as a horseperson. It's nothing to do with people "scoffing" at Monty Roberts (on the contrary, many people have great respect for him).

If you have lots more experience other than the two weeks NR course, and we're doing you an injustice, I think you probably need to say so. Most horse-owners would want evidence of competence, and references before letting a stranger work with their horses.
 
I'm not naive that horses are large and can be dangerous, which is the reason I did this course to begin with. I am looking to work with "well mannered"/ already schooled horses that could "teach me".... I'm not looking to work with dangerous horses, OBVIOUSLY an experienced qualified horseman would need to do that...I just want to learn!

I have been working with "riding school" horses over the last year, and I HAVE had people "scoffed" at Monty stuff I do, which is the reason I was looking elsewhere

It was suggested by a friend to put a post on here... I DO NOT want to ruin anyone's horses, I just wanted to further my education. I do not think this is the best place to ask for help...
 
As others have mentioned, Adam and Nicole who are based nr Cirencester (they wrote a book I read years ago). They have a small yard where they use natural horsemanship to train horses, inspired by Monty Roberts etc. They were looking for a groom/WP I think not long ago if I'm not mistaken so they are worth contacting. Google Whispering Back.

They are probably your best bet, I doubt many people will let a stranger do things with their horse especially if the owner themselves knows little about natural horsemanship.

Thanks hcm88. I have contacted them. I'm open to suggestions in what to do... I don't believe in telling people off when all one is doing is asking for help...

Good luck in your search. I understand the need to gain that experience, and you were clear in your first post that you were not looking for 'problem' horses, because you would have said so.

It's difficult in all walks of life trying to find experience and you are viewed as a 'noob' unfortunately, if you are just beginning, and many people will look down their nose at you, it's just life I'm afraid. If you don't find anyone, see if you can offer to help at your local riding school or rescue centre, you will gain oodles of experience there. (I know you said you all ready have done that, but keep it up!)

Don't give up on this forum just yet, if you look about a bit, you will find many useful tips and hints to help you out.

Ditto..don't be put off, just pay attention to the helpful posts, ignore the rest
 
Just be very careful that people don't try & use you for problem horses under pretence of offering you experience, I know of people who'd happily take advantage as you're free. And some people will be more than happy to offer you a nutter to work with just for a laugh at your expense, so check carefully wherever you go.

I don't think anyone was telling you off, just giving advice and explaining why people may not be keen unless you give more information about yourself and what you're looking for.

I find this forum an excellent source of advice, but you will get honest and direct attitudes. Sometimes people can be rude here (as with all forums) but I don't think anyone has been to you.

Actually that's not quite true is it..of course people aren't
irresponsible or some kind of loon to let OP near their horses after a
2 week introductory course of Monty Roberts techniques and I can imagine the OP felt very hurt by that, clearly she did as she said so
How sad that yet again someone says they dont feel this is the right place to ask for help! This happens all the time and is not necessary. OP if you want to come and spend some time with my horses under my supervision of these techniques you would be very
welcome. I'm impressed that you have been to Montys farm.

Bless you, for your support :) The thing is anyone who does approach me, I am happy to learn from them too! BEFORE I do any work with the person's horse I would show CERTIFIED MONTY ROBERTS INSTRUCTORS video of doing them Join Ups/ Long Lining 'correct' way, so that I ensure I am doing it correctly, AND to show what level I need to be in order to pass the 'Introductory Course' Exam I am preparing for. Trailer loading I would show from Monty's Online Uni...

Contrary to comments here, I am NOT working with other peoples horses blind....

It might be worth joining the Intelligent Horsemanship discussion group and asking there. I think there are a fair few like-minded people in your area, if you know where to find them.

Yes...my interpretation of a comment that no one would let the Op near their horses, if they do they must be mad?? A fairly reasonable association in my view.


The OP doesn't sound absurd at all, what an absurd comment to make!
 
UPDATE :)

I had a number of people contact me, and have since worked with a number of horses (I will be going to Spain to work someone's horses soon).

As stated in my previous posts, I was not looking to work with "crazy horses". I ensure the list of objectives I am required to do are shown to the owner, and most IMPORTANTLY the owner is PRESENT and INVOLVED at all times.

I wanted to say THANK YOU to those people that tried to help, rather than jumping to NEGATIVE scenario situation.

P.S I also now have my own horse, and would help someone else out if they ever needed to use my horse ;)
