Today I requested OH to change the horses' rugs to MW, Daisy (overbright bint who dropped me, hence months on crutches etc) has a lovely new Amigo rug in a gorgeous sky blue (proving that i have forgiven her.) she's been in a red Fal all winter up till now.
OH changed her rug, put her out for hours (during which i saw her turn her head and scratch her shoulder for a while, so she definitely saw the new rug), at lunchtime he brought her in again and she saw herself in the stable mirror, stopped dead, stared at herself (normally totally ignores mirror, it's been there for years), wandered off, then came back to check herself out again.
So, i know this isn't exactly scientific, but i reckon this 'proves' that they can DEFINITELY see different colours, very clearly!
Interesting, huh?

Ha ha!! checking herself out in her new clothes!

My sisters horse used to be really funny with white things (but i think it was because it reflects more light than other colours??)

I once through her lunch over the door and went back 15mins later and she was stood in the corner of her box, blowing away at it, far too scared to go anywhere near the white bucket it was in!

Also if hacking past stationary cars.... white vans.... very wide space was given to those....

odd though as her best friend (my mare) is grey??

Ill never quite figure out these equines!! xx

I think they see in shades rather than colours. My girl took exception to some light blue rope tying up some apple tree branches today.

My friends pony was scared of anything blue. We had great fun getting him to jump blue barrels. He was scared of blue buckets etc, until we changed his water bucket and feed bowl to blue ones. He is now much better with blue things.

Thiis is definitely true. The section A I had when I was kid was petriefied of yellow wagons....any other colour he wouldn't bat an eyelid but yellow he hated. I specifically remember hacking back from a show when I was about 8(long time ago!), there was a steady stream of boxes coming past and he was fine - but as soon as a yellow one came along he freaked, my mum dragged me off him just him time for him to rear up and spin round a few times!

My Haflinger constantly tips over the yellow water bucket as she knows it's the one she used to get hay in in the field - she doesn't bother with the black one.
She also tries to eat her orange(carrot coloured) leadrope, but doesn't her blue one.

I'm pretty sure they can tell different colours too
Lace doesn't bat an eyelid at traffic but she will have a little look if its a yellow car!

Lol....my boy hates anything yellow. He shies at grit boxes on the side of the road, yellow cars and daffodils! We have two hose pipes on the yard, one green and one yellow. The green one he takes no notice of when I drag it into the stable to fill his water bucket up. If I use the yellow one, he stands in the corner staring at it and snorting!

No, she had to go back for a second look as she couldn't believe her eyes she was looking in the mirror thinking "I thought humans could see colour , does she not know Im a ladddyyyy, blue hmmmpppp right how can I trash this one :), ahh the straps there, just chew this bit and ohh I can feel a pink FAL coming"
