As title, 2 of mine are going on loan, will use the BHS sample from the website but wonder if it is normal for the loaner or owner to upkeep and pay for routine injections, teeth etc. Any other tips for smooth loaning would be great. Thanks.

Loaner.

Although I do think microchipping and other things tied to the records/tracing should it be stolen is the owners remit.

I had a couple of horses on loan years ago before I bought my first horse and I payed for everything, farrier, wormer, jabs the lot.

Hmmmm see I disagree, I would include this in my monthly loan charge, that way you pay for jabs and know for sure thay have been done!

Thanks - I am going to continue to pay for the insurance on each of them, as I want to be 100% sure that they are covered for vets fees, incase anything happens and they get sent back broken, I know they are covered.

The loaner.

If the owner needs proof the vaccines are being kept up to date they just need to look at the passport. It should all be in the loan agreement.

OP ask the people loaning your horses to set up a standing order into your bank account for the insurance.

As you'll see on the bhs loan agreement the person leaning accepts full financial responsibility.

That isn't a loan then, it's either a lease or a share if it's not a full loan. Very unusual for there to be a charge to loan a horse.

I agree, anything to do with registration/chipping should be dealt with (and paid for) by the owner, normal running costs of vaccinations, farrier etc paid for by the loaner with a stipulation that they were done on time else the loaner be responsible for starting whole course again. If I was a sharer, I'd be happy to pay a contribution towards costs but not the full whack if owner/someone was using as well.

I agree with this, I have a pony out on loan and the loaner is responsible for ALL costs, as I have accepted the costs when I have had two LWVTB.

Before you put the horses on loan make sure that they are freezemarked on their shoulders, micro-chipped and registered on the ned-online web site. That way if they dissapear they can be easily identified. Ensure that the agreement is checked by a specialist equine solicitor before issuing it. Also ask to see the passport, driving license and rates bill for the people loaning the horse and photcopy them. Sadly too many horses dissapear while on loan.

My first 'normal' loan, I paid for everything bar insurance, the owner continued to pay for that, just advised the insurance company he was going on loan to me and what he would be doing. She let me know the vacc date, so I booked in, and she came down with his passport on the morning, he had his jabs, and i dropped passport back to her that evening.

Current 'loan' although i use the term loosly as the loan ended over a year ago, and the owner has become uncontactable and dissappeared - but thats a whole other story - I have all paperwork/passports etc. so I have paid for everything for her (into the 1000's for her treatment) and vaccinations.

Angelz,
If I pay to borrow your horse then I am leasing it not having it on loan.

If I "lease" it I pay the owner a set amount per month / year and in that case vaccinatipons could be included in that amount.
If I "loan" it then I don't pay the owner anything whilst I have it and would be responsible (in my experience) for all charges bar insurance.

I have one on loan for 12 months as a favour to the owner. She pays the insurance which I think is wise, because she has the peace of mind in knowing the horse is covered at the level she chooses.

Because I took the horse to help her, she did actually say she'd pay for shoes, dentist, wormers etc too, but that didn't actually happen. Ah well....
