So, I'm a learner driver, I turned 17 not many months ago, and today my dad decided he'd take me out for practise, as parents do, on some quieter roads around where we live. L plates and everything.

We turned onto the road leading to the village green - the busiest road in the area - and were met by a girl who is the year above me at school (y13) on a pony I know isnt hers (she doesnt have one, rides someones horses for them) cantering along the tarmac?

She was laughing her head off, really relaxed (didn't seem to care), one handed, chatting to her friend who was riding alongside on a bike. The pony looked a bit wild, and was skidding everywhere. I slammed on the brakes (we were at a junction and she speed-trotted-skidded in front) and was totally speechless. I don't like trotting on the road, would even comprehend cantering.

Should I have said something or was it okay just to think 'irresponsible' and drive on?:confused:

frankly if it was me i would do my very best to find out whose horses/ponies she rides and let them know, unfair to the animals and the owner to act in this way.

Just a point but you said the pony looked a bit wild?
Today i was on a group hack riding up a tiny windy country lane when a van drove up behind us - we all decided to trot to a decent passing place. Unfortunately my horse decided he had to win this "sudden fun race" and proceeded to canter without me asking - bad boy!
Just thinking maybe this pony was spooked and being silly?

I'm sure I can find out whose horses they are - we are in a small area and everyone seems to know each other and their horses, so I'm sure that the lady who runs my yard knows them, and I happened to mention it to her in passing today so hopefully the message with be passed via word of mouth! She's also be spotted riding at speed on a footpath which horses are strictly not allowed on!

I think I may have been wrong in saying the pony looked wild - probably just because it was trotting/broke into canter it just looked... speedier than a pony should on a road? Even if the pony was spooked she wasn't acting particularly responsible about it, poor pony :(
