New lad is a chunky belguim draft cross.

Strangely his coat is extremely soft and not waterproof at all. The smallest amount of water goes right through to his skin

The only time I've come across this before is with a friends elderly mare

Can you give us photos soulfull? I'd love to see a horse that is soaked to the skin. Never seen one before... all of my horses hair stays dry as a bone!!

A coat of linseed oil on the skin will definitely improve this. You may need two coats depending on manufacturers instructions.

:D:D:D

Could it just be because he's 'between coats'? I have a fell x who grows a very thick coat but when he's moulting he's all soft and downy and not waterproof at all!

Poor boy, Linseed sounds like a good shout but obviously it will take its time to work, what about giving him a light spray over with some baby oil, gives them a lovely shine and would help to get a bit of oil back in there hopefully? Or just rug, what do you plan on doing with him?

I wish my boy was soft and downy... he looks like a bog brush at the minute with the coat change!

My appy was like this but that was when rugged and clipped but even before first clip water would go through to skin. He is now retired and didn't have a rug on all last winter and seems to have developed a lovely waterproof coat!

It could be he is inbetween coats. I've only had I'm 9/10 wks

He had never had a rug before

He is rugged now when it's wet or windy (wind blows his coat so gets cold )

I'm going to be having a play at dressage(dont do it serious anymore) and just having fun.

Just seem strange for a lad of his type

My horse had a soft silky fine coat, and got soaked to the skin in fine summer rain. (had her since November so was rugged.) was still a shivering mess in June/July. Has been on lots of hard feed, balancer, and linseed since Nov. But made no difference. I havent brushed/ washed her at all since may, and she at last has a small amount of grease in her coat that will keep a good bit of rain off. Has taken many months tho!

Sounds like donkeys as their coats aren't waterproof hence why they love the hot weather.
I didn't know that

Hmm okay a long road then. Thanks

Ok haha. I think the problem is you just never know nowadays some people are so critical

'tis true... it seems gone are the days we could really string things out with some humour but also get to the root of the problem at the same time...

Anyway... certainly loving the linseed meal idea, all ours are on it from fine andalusians to our beloved M&M's unrugged all year round... good luck soulfull x
