Having had my horse for 4 years now, I can honestly say I can only remember him ever taking a pee with me on board once, whenever we get back from a hack or after a skooling session he will pee on the yard, but does'nt seem to like doing it with me on board, anybody else have this with your horses ?

Nope both mine have to have a wee everytime with me on board while we out hacking, I know when they need to do it as both of them start pulling me to the side to go on the grass. My 5yr old even had a wee in the menage in the middle of schooling him, then decided to jump the wet patch each time we came round to it

Mine very rarely pees with me on board but did this weekend. We got stuck at side of road on grass verge both on girl horses standing in our stirrups while they peed simultaneously.

Nope, both mine have them out hacking. Mine has particular spots on regular routes, which while she doesn't always go, if she needs one will wait despite being desperate till she gets there. Quite often has them when warming up too, but never stops working for one.

Only once in my memory has my boy had a wee with me on board, always waits until he is in his stable :)

I did try one last weekend that had a wee with me, I missed the signals coz it was so alien to me!

only once when we were on a 4 hourr hack and he wasgetting fidgity so must have been busting for it and it was probably the longest pee ever and it puddled part of the road :o poor boy haha

My mare never has...ever!

My YO has managed to toilet train most of the horses on our yard. 2 mares wee in a bucket and the geldings are brought out to a grassy area and wee on demand......I had never seen anything like it before!

My gelding has never done it while I'm riding. I think it's got to have something to do with them not being able to stretch out as much as they want/get into the urinating position when there's a rider on board plus the feeling of the saddle and girth around the girth area/close to the loins or kidneys.

Also, even if I'm not riding him, he would only do it on a hard surface (e.g. the yard/lorry) if he's extremely desperate to wee. I think he's one of those that don't like the splashing of the urine onto his legs, and therefore usually does it in the stable/field.

Mine doesn't it everytime I walk him on grass. Well today he did it on the road. Vet coming tomorrow to check him out as he pee'd 5 times on a 2 and a half hour hack. One slightly worried owner.

Never peed with me on board. His funny habit is this - As soon as he gets an inkling that the tack is going on, can be as little as me walking into stable with his over-reaches or a curry comb, he paces around the stable, usually twice, before pooping. He'll not stand until he's carried this ritual out. Happens without fail at home.

That's like mine -I've only ever seen him wee once on a hard surface and that was at horsepital when he was being allergy tested and wasn't allowed any bedding. He held it as long as he could but eventually had to wee on the mats and you could see he hated it.

I had a nightmare journey down to devon once (delays, getting lost, tailbacks for accidents) and he was in the lorry for 8 hours. He kept his legs crossed till we arrived and when he got out I put him in a stable and he had the longest pee I have ever seen a horse do.

And when I| get to the yard he'll see me and have a wee before I get him out of the stable like remembering to go when you leave the house.

I used to ride a mare that pee-ed every time she entered the school, without fail, as soon as she got 5 strides in, before I could mount up, I had to stop and wait for her to pee.

Most times we hack out my mare will. Very fussy about weeing in hard surfaces though.. all my 4 are a fussy about hard surface weeing x

I cant ever remember my boy talking a pee with me on board. He Hates to pee on a hard surface, he'll only do it when he's desperate. He pees in the same spot in every stable (bum in the back rh corner). He is turned out into a sand arena every day in winter and he never pees out there either, it's the first thing he does when he's brought back to his stable. My friend has a cob who has peed 15 times on a 2 hour beach ride! He would usually pee at least 3 times in an hour lesson. Vet checked him out and found nothing. He said it was just a habit.

Iv had one of mine for 13 years and he has never peed with me on board and had only ever pood once with me on board!

If we go on a long ride and he needs to go he gets naughtier and naughtier and the second we get back he will almost dive into his stable to relieve himself!

He wont go if he's tied up either. If he wants to go he starts walking back and forth until i put him in his stable to go to the loo!

When we were on a livery yard he

Ignore that last sentence. I gave into technology last week and got a new fangled phone which im struggling to get used to!

Boe mine is exactly the same, hates to pee whilst ridden unless totally desperate! He goes when we get back once I put the flexible bucket under him and say wee! Bless him!
Lol @ potty trained horses :D
Mine both pee on a hack. Blaze has a particular bridle path that she ALWAYS pees on, if we go that way! Jas pees anywhere but her pee signals are a bit confusing :D Bless, she is a bit 'special' at times :D

One of my shetlands used to pee in front of the judge without fail everytime he went into a ridden class. I think he just wanted more 'judge time' lol! The last time he did it he got it a bit wrong. The judge was pulling 2 ponies out to stand up at a time as it was a big class on a time limit so Flint stood and pee'd whilst the judge was looking at the other pony. He sulked after that and has never tried the trick since lol!

None of my others have pee'd with a rider onboard. The racers wait until they are back on their boxes.

One of the mares I work with will not go to the loo at all when she has rugs on. It stems from when she wore a duvet in winter and it slipped back and got stuck in the fillet string and she didn't want to get wet panties for lack of a better term lol! So she gets her rugs off at breakfast to pee. She is a right fidget and the minute the rugs are off she sprints to the back of her box to relieve herself. We even put rugs on her now that are 3in too short, no fillet strings, no tail flaps and certainly no duvets and she still has the notion in her head that she can't pee with any rugs on. Weirdo mare!

My dads horse very very rarely has a wee with anyone on board, we have had him 15yrs and known it about 3 times. Only in recent years has he started weeing in his stable for years ans years he would cross his legs until we let him out in the morning. If he had to be kept in all day my dad used to wander around with Lewis so he could have his morning wee.

Nope never, only once when we got lost on a hack, she sidestepped onto the grass before promptly going

Dont really ever see her pee in the field or stable either

I think she is shy ;)

Mine started doing this about this time last year. He's never been bothered about peeing while ridden, but the frequency increased considerably, same as yours.
After a short while, I had the vet out. They took bloods, a urine sample and gave his sheath a good clean (at my request..he needs sedation to let you near it). His sheath was quite grubby, and I swear it was slightly smaller a few days later, as if it had been slightly puffy in the first place.
All his tests came back fine, so I have no idea why he does it. His back is fine, which was the only other physical reason I could think of for doing it.
We've come to the conclusion that it's more of a mental/habitual thing, rather than a physical ailment.
He seems absolutely fine, and the peeing has decreased in frequency now, although it would say it is still more than average.
I hope your boy's ok :)

Thank you alliersv1 he is ok in himself not drinking more than normal. His sheath looks quite clean but will get the vet to have a look. His stable isn't any wetter either, he seems to prefer to pee outside. His old owner did comment that he doesn't pee much in his stable. Fingers crossed it's normal for him.

I made the mistake of letting mine eat when he stopped for a pee, and now he tries to stop for a pee every time he sees a patch of tasty grass! With it coming into cow parsely season he is peeing for Britain just now.
