Horses routines at Weekends

Just wondered what is the usual really?

I find it really odd that some yards/people put their horses to bed late on a week night (6-7pm) but at the weekend they might do it at 4pm?

Thought struck me as i got to the yard at 6pm last night, to find just my horse was out and all the lights were off!
 
I try to keep to the same as weekdays. Whether it's weekdays or weekends, mine are usually last to be put to bed and I am first there in the morning. Can't bear the thought of them standing there in the morning waiting for breakfast and turnout or haynets. On saturday and sunday, sometimes I go and feed everyone, put mine out then go home back to bed for an hour ! Livery yard is just next door but one to my house, so nearly as convenient as having them at home.
 
I turn out at the same time at weekends but do tend to bring in earlier whilst it is still light.

I'd like to bring in whilst it was light in the week too (and judging by the horses reactions when I'm late so would they) but work doesn't allow it!!

ETS: on days I'm competing she might not get out at all at the weekend. Such is life. Doesn't seem to bother her too much!

I have pretty much the same routine 7 days a week, though because I work around their needs according to the time of year, the times are on a sort of rolling time plan. I'm an early riser and my early evenings are free usually for the horses anyway.


It is a shame when owners leave horses standing in because its the weekend, but then again,horses do get used to it and sometimes, people who work and do DIY, need a bit of a reprieve one or two days a week.
 
Mine is never in a strict routine anyways.

Weekdays she gets seen too from 8-8.30
weekends its usually 9-9.30 (I have a lay in)
finish off weekdays 6-7pm
weekends 4-6pm
 
What is this thing you call a weekend?;)

Every day is the same here, I haven't had a day off since I snuck off to Ottawa for 2 days back in March.

If anything I do everything earlier at the weekends because once Owners start coming onto the yard and wanting to chat it is really hard to get jobs done without appearing rude, no-one seems to appreciate that I may actually have a family life or plans as well :(
 
I have to agree with you... I always think it must be hard for them to be in for a good 4 hours longer than normal. SOMETIMES I will get him in an hour earlier than normal (if I'm going out) and he does get a maximum of an hour's lie in at weekends, but he does get additional hay to cover the extra time he is in, and everyone at my current yard is on the same sort of timescales... but yes, I used to feel sorry for all the horses at my old yard who were sometimes in for 4, 5,6 or more hours longer than normal at the weekend, with nothing aditional to keep them occupied :(
 
There is one early riser on our yard who nearly always gets there really early whatever the day and feeds. At the weekend most of the rest of us get there about 8.30 - 9 in the winter much earlier in the summer but the horses don't seem bothered as they seem to get that it's a lazy day. However if his mate Seamus goes out before I get there mine will do things like dig out his banks and make a right mess - just to teach me not to be too late!

If the weather is really awful then I do occasionally bring in and feed about an hour earlier. This weekend I got drenched stewarding at a dressage show on Saturday so I fed at 3.45 :eek: and went home!. My friends always check the horses before leaving later and locking up the yard. So far he hasn't died or been overly stressed because of it.
