People want the impossible- namely a 5/6 year old with enough scope to go round Badminton and ready to PN tomorrow. It must also be able to put up with a muppet riding it, be totally safe to hack and exceptionally easy to handle.

Either that or a dead donkey that is ultra steady to hack.

Sorry, I haven't followed Ernie so don't know what he is or how much you want for him!
It was just a general comment about the market today.
I have a few friends that have recently purchased and have been looking for a while but weren't prepared to pay the extortionate sums being asked. As soon as a nice horse came along that was realistically priced it was snapped up.

i'm actually looking for a horse at the moment , good ones at the right price are selling like hot cakes!

i've phoned about sopme who have been sold before the ad has even been published , & others who have sold to first looker so i've not been able to see them

also i've seen some that are nice & ok price but not quite what i want that have sold quickly

however there do seem to be quite a few that are hanging about , of the ones that i've seen thay have been ones that are overpriced &/or i've suspected there is a bit of something wrong , eg not happy with movement in a certain leg

although i have just got a video of what appears to be a very nice horse at a fair price & the lady said i was the first to call , just over a week after the ad was placed

in my experience nice quality youngsters & horses with sound proven competition record are selling well

I must say i didnt have a call for the first 4 weeks then had 5 all in about 2 days !! very strange not sold my boy yet the problem is had a few muppetts to try him out and he is a competition horse with huge potential but you have to be able to ride he is only 6 yo !!

I feel they want to get on and he perform all the technical movements perfectly - he can do them though i am not a fantastic rider but have trained him - he is a baby and need his enducation carried on !!

he is in my signature !! he is the best horse to handle as well my friends 7yo can lead him around and do basically anything with him !!

and they want all that for under 5k correct !!

I agree with Pennyh, in the Midlands the "good "horses go before I've had chance to see them, all I want is a happy hacker that looks well will pop a jump and will school on the flat once a week and priced to reflect this.Alot of the horse ads that tend to be hanging around are mainly competition horses, I have a fair budget and I'm still struggling, conscious not to wate a horses potential put not wanting a complete plod.
The search goes on, so if anyone knows of a horse 16hh max that fits the bill let me know!

I think that people have gotten WAY too enthusiastic with their pricing. To see horses that have jumped round a few intros, a couple of DCs BSJA, or done a couple of Prelims being priced in the 5 figure bracket is a complete and utter joke - don't care if it IS by a good sire or has *potential*

ETS: SM that was not aimed at you - have no idea how much you want for Ernie, just sick of people thinking their horses are worth a ridiculous amount when they have not acheived anything any horse could do!

Have to agree with this! Thats why I ended up going to Ascot sales

I think the problem is that people think their horse is wonderful with olympic potential and will stick it up for silly prices so when someone with half a brain advertises their horse for a reasonable price people assume it must have something wrong with it.

Someone is selling a horse at out yard at the moment who hasn't competed for 2 years apart from 1 or 2 dressage competitions, was lame last summer with bad laminitis and has had tendon problems and they want 6k for it. Its does have lovely paces but I personnaly wouldn't touch it, it is overweight and unfit. If you wanted to buy a horse now to compete you would at least want one that is fit!

I've sold both of mine - Brocket (LW show cob £11k) last week, and Pimms (small hunter £12k) in May. Both were sold to the first people that saw them, and both had calls from the ads within 20 minutes of the ad going on HorseQuest. They were at the higher end of the market price wise, but what people were interested in was the safety factor. It is common knowledge that the people usually with the most spending money for a horse are those who are not riding horses all day every day. They want something that has a good temperament. My two had temperaments second to none, and that is why they sold easily, at good prices.

You would probably find that a more talented horse that is a bit quirky, will not reach the same price as a good all round riding club type that is a bit more forgiving of the rider.

As an interesting aside, cob prices went up almost immediately my ad went on HorseQuest. However, mine is the only one that has sold. Back to the temperament thing again!

PLUS yours don't just have *potential* they are PROVING it, and on the same stage that they will progress through. When people advertise horses that are doing low leveljumping, there is absolutely NO guarentee the horse will jump bigger tracks, usually it is just the furtive imagination of the owner at play! Your 2 were VERY well priced IMHO, worth every penny, as was proven!

TBH, the standard of horses for sale on the market have gone down as well, not just the prices rising.

Most of the imported horses are far below standard as well as some of the British bred horses.

IMO a horse is a horse, lets not get over excited about them price wise. MOST horses will never be Olympians, some may be but even then most will have to have years, upon years of extensive schooling to put in. Even if a horse showed potential I wouldn't pay much more than another horse ( this is on the basis of it being a youngster who is just starting out). I would DREAM of paying over £10k for a horse- Why on earth would you be foolish enough to throw that amount away.

Everyone on here doesn't help with the ridiculously high prices peole say when someone posts a how much. I look at the description and think £3k and other people are saying £8-10K. I never bother posting what I think as it causes too many arguements

I don't know why no one has phoned about Ernie he is very reasonable.

i agree, im looking for a allround nice horse for the 3500 budget and its rather hard at the moment so any on here or anyone that knows of such a horse PM hehe

Someone I know has just sold what I (and she) would call a RC horse, done a bit of v low level WH and a bit of dressage 10yo I think - £6500 no questions

Sold within a week!

When we were chatting last year she reckoned 3.5!

I think you are very lucky to buy a quality horse for under 7k to be honest.

I just sold a nice horse 6 year old jumping b/n disc to the first person who viewed him for 9k.

Horses have gone up in prices compared to 10 years ago, but thats inflation - so have houses !!

your average handbag £500
your average car £20k
your average house £250k
your average horse £7k

I think you get what you pay for x
