as the title says really..
how can you tell your horses shoes are too small?

my horse had his feet done not long ago and i feel that they are too small as there doesn't seem to be any heel support

any suggestions??

cheers

I dont really know alot about shoes and feet, but maybe get annother farrier out to have a look if your not sure, and nobody here can give you advice on it. Though im sure they can.

Does your horse have a history of pull shoes?

It may just have been shod penny on penny which is effectively hunter style. I like to leave a little bit of extra heel support where i can but this is not always possible, at the end of the day a shoe that stays on is better for the horses foot.

As long as the shoes are covering the heels then there is heel support! (this does not mean there needs to be metal sticking out the back)

The way the horse is shod also depends on how often it is shod, you would not shoe a horse like this if it was being left say 8 weeks but is appropriate for a horse shod every 4-6 weeks

Shoes that are too small (can also apply to shoes left on too long) are sunken in at the heel and then start to grow over the shoes also the clenches will raise quicker than normal

My horse has just gone up a size in shoes from 5 to 6 to support his heels and because after 3 weeks following shoeing, his feet were growing over the old shoes and his feet hardly grow at all. Also the shoes were prone to 'slipping' sideways.

Any chance of a pic of the offending shoes GoldenWonder? If your farrier is worth his salt I suspect he only trimmed them back hard for good reason, perhaps because he need to balance the foot by removing a flair? It would be easier to tell if we could see a picture

i will get a piccie for you

he had his feet shod about 3 weeks ago and his feet have started to over grow the shoe at the heel area if that makes sense the horse has never pulled a shoe off and is shod at the latest between 6-8 weeks. he only has fronts but am now gonna put a full set on as he has started to flair on the hinds (farriers advice)

thanks for your advice
