Horses sold from the field

Sometimes there are genuine reasons why a horse is sold from the field. Other times it may be that they are a nightmare to ride or have other issues such as difficult behaviour. Always go into something like this with eyes WIDE open.

I can't see the link but I'd always phone up and have a chat, then go and have a look, some sellers just need a quick sale for whatever reason, not always sinister, lots of diamonds in the rough hiding out there in fields.

Tidying up doesn't take much after a horse is bought if it is just muck and mud, a pedicure and a haircut, on the other hand if I trimmed and tidied up, bought in etc I'd whack a bit more on the asking price.

There are many reasons for selling off the field that I can think of.

Youngsters, out of work horses (perhaps just outgrown, no longer wanted/ridden, no handler etc) or broodmares for a start.

Buying off the field doesn't mean you can't see them handled or have them vetted, unless the seller says so, then it is a case of caveat emptor.

no.

i tend to only buy youngsters now and i would never buy anything 3 or older that is sold from the field.

they tend to have been tried and either are nuts or lame.

I think there are plenty of reasons why a horse may be turned away, but it may be hard for you to verify whether the reason is genuine. For example, owner may have been through a divorce/worked abroad/travelled/been ill/had a baby....

in general terms, ditto this

I bourght a 5yr old tb from field once. I spoke to owner on phone and asked if horse lunged ok and would she take her tack up when i went to view. The horse was being sold from field as was to much for owner, because of this hadnt been ridden for a year.
I lunged horse then just went for it and got on and rode round field in walk for a few mins.
As far as i was concerned as long as horse would let me on and wander around i would sort any other problems out later on. The horse was a bit nuts for 6mths or so after coming home with me, but with schooling went on to be quite nice.
Bit old now to want to take to many chances anymore, but if owner would let me do same as above i would def buy from field again.

I bought a very very poor tb gelding off the field - could hardly walk he was so badly riddled with infected mud fever, he was skin and bone, had bite marks all over him, within 3 or 4 months he was like a new boy - turned out to be a "bit of a flighty one !!" but had no harm in him at all and has gone on to be a very calm relaxed hack for a lovely lady (me and him just didn't gel).

Hello Alphamare, is it you, you know...the Iron lady/Metal Mare?

i must say she is about as welsh x arab as my big toe,but she is x something. If the owner wont let you atck her up and just sit on her unheld then you should head for the hills. She is not broodmare quality, but you never know she may be a fab allrounder though my experience of sold from the field is another way of saying ' you go injure yourself on your own property, that way you can't sue me'.
