Horses that jump field fencing

OH rang me at work today to ask why I had put my mare on her own in the school, seems she has jumped into the grass school over the 5ft fencing!

Got me thinking on why on earth she would of done this, plenty of grass on the other side. She has had some pretty major back problems over the last 6 months and is now on the road to recovery and back in light work, possibly feeling alot better and releasing some energy?

Anyone have a horse that jumps fencing and why do you think they do it?
 
What type of fencing is it? (its just often they are going under rather than over if its electric). Often they do it if there is nicer grass or a favoured companion on the other side. My Haflinger jumped out when we had a gale and a pig arc came flying through her field....:-)))

For real fence jumpers we use horsemesh 4 or 5 foot, if necess with an offset electric line on the top.

Or you could even have this like me! (5 foot tornado hi tension horsemesh wire and 2 wires above that!)

Our 14.2 used to jump out when she wanted to change friends whilst she was away from home with my daughter, and kept everyone amused. At home she was always liable to jump if she was minded, even took 5ft gate at age 23, into the garden!

It is a worry if they get in the habit, we never did manage to stop it. We just always had to be aware of where she was, that she had companions and could not get to the road.
 
My 2 year old does this :eek: He starts in one paddock and houdinis out to visit the others horses. He has grass and hay and field mate but likes to travel around. It's getting silly now as today I found him in the yard and very happy too totally by himself whilst the others were looking peeved in their fields. I now have to find a way of keeping him in. Fencing is post and rails with electric above and below. He has never done it when I'm watching and then just appears.

We had a 14.2 who used to jump the 5 bar gate when he had enough and wanted in.
 
lachlanandmarcus: That's some set up and a rather beautiful boy you have! The fencing is double taped electric but hoping it's just a one off would rather not have to re-fence it all!

Grumpymoo: Yes she has my gelding as company they get on well and generally graze side by side, more to do with the gelding being besotted with her than her caring ;)

Morrismob: Sounds like you have a nice eventer in the making! ;)
 
ginger boy used to do it, because he could:rolleyes: he'd often jump from the good paddock into the bare paddock and then get himself in a tizz because big girl didn't follow but the twit never figured he could jump back in with her:rolleyes: in the end i had to double fence his paddock, 5ft fencing with a row of 3ft plastic posts about 2ft inside, was enough to confuse him/put him off;)
 
Dear I'm happy none of mine jump fencing. Must be frustrating. Our Belgian draft has been know to go trough it :rolleyes: has no idea how big he is, bless. However bit of electrical tape and a new field buddy solved that problem.
 
My boy jumps 5ft tape quite happily if he's in a field with another horse and strangely won't come in if he's out with another horse?!:confused::confused:

Can keep him in with 5ft post and rail with tape over the top electrified and can see other horses but they can't touch him... Doesn't mattr if he has grass or not. I had him out with a shetland and a minature and he was jumping out everyday where he gets bullied... Would stay in with 12.2hh grumples but he climbed through fencing. Horses and fencing just aren't my favourite.
