I had a mare who smelt like rotten meat for maybe the last three months of her life. Something was obviously going wrong inside but she was eating, charging round the field like an idiot and held her weight fine until I got down there one morning and found her distressed. She smelt absolutely vile, nothing like a horse at all.

Gosh that is very interesting. hubby’s mare was absolutely the same, charged around, full of beans, happy but smelt like she was rotting, hubby doesn’t have a great sense of smell so could never smell it and the vet I mentioned it to couldn’t smell it again but it used to make me feel nauseous as it was just like rotting meat. We only had her 7 months before she died.

Cushing's horses can have a distinctive sweet musty smell apparently. I think it might be a similar thing that humans with Parkinson's can have.

Interesting!

I always used to say that my daughter's old pony smelled like old terry towelling nappies after a few washes!

My last horse had a horrible smell coming from her mouth, it was a burst abscess on her gum. It smelt of rotting flesh, which it indeed was.

But for the smell which made me investigate further you'd not have known there was an issue as she was eating as normal. Horses can be very stoic.
