Had a message from a friend last night - she had been away on a course all day and got home to find that two of her horses (which live out year round with a huge field shelter) had been trapped inside by a falling oak tree, someone had called the fire brigade and they had been cut free but no one knew how to contact her!

Absolutely terrifying!

Heck!

Were they injured at all? How lucky that someone noticed and called for help, and that the oak didn't fall onto the shelter!

The field is at the end of a very large village which she moved to not long ago, hence they wouldn't know how to contact her, horses are amazingly ok - a 17.2hh Warmblood and a 10hh Shetland!! I'm guessing they are going to have issues with enclosed spaces though. Fencing had all been secured by the time she got there but obviously she has a very large tree to remove! My heart just stopped when she told me, and amazing horses for staying calm - they are both total sweethearts. She also has an a 12.2hh ex show pony that was in the field which is also ok.

Sounds like Lincs and Notts, really did have a battering!!! We usually escape it all in the midlands!! So glad they are o.k, there was definately somebody looking over the equines yesterday! x

Yes everything usually misses us. Just heard that the Warmblood was getting very stressed and they were going to call the vet to sedate him but one of the fireman had horses and managed to get in and calm him down. Also heard one of the fireman fell arse first in the mud on the way out! Yes someone up there was definately looking out for them!

Call the fire brigade?? That seems rather over the top. Couldn't you just call the local farmer who would come by in a tractor, pull the tree out of the way.

The person who found them called the fire brigade as the tree had smashed the front of the shelter and was embedded in it, they had to gradually cut them out, think they would have freaked if they had just pulled the tree out - plus the shelter would probably have come down on top of them!

I wasn't there so can't say what I would have done but better safe than sorry!
