Horses with cat whiskers

I was talking to someone last night who was saying that her horse had had to be clipped a few times because he had cat whiskers growing back.

My horses never get cat whiskers apart from on their heads - they have very warm rugs and are only clipped three times a year and I never clip after Christmas yet they are out 12 hours a day in all weathers.

Do horses grow cat whiskers because they're not warm enough? I was at my old boss's house on Sunday and all her horses which are fully clipped and live out have very cat whiskery coats. Their rugs are not the best...!!

My horse has them (trimmed them off the other day) and he is always very well rugged.

I was always told they are the horse's reaction to not being warm enough.
