On our livery yard we have seen over the last two weeks a horses tail suddenly cut short in the field and today a handful of a horses mane randomly cut as well.

These are very strange as we dont have a lot of liveries and the horses are only out at the moment for about 5 hours in which all the staff are out and about mucking out etc.

We havent seen anyone but we are getting concerned about perhaps its a new "tagging" system??
We dont live near a main road so its not passing walkers or anything like that.

Has anyone else seen this or had any experiences??

Any thoughts would be greatfully recieved :D

Before I had him, my horse had his tail cut of by gypsies to use for rocking horse tails. Took bl**dy ages to grow back but at least it wasn't something more sinister. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon!

Of course it's not a tagging system. Just think, it's highly unlikely that anyone would want to "tag" that number of horses over a period of time at the same yard. It's probably kids. I'm sure it was kids when my pony's tail was cut in the field. (Neatly to hock height, cheeky beggars).
Sorry, didn't mean to sound grumpy, but it's not likely to be "tagging."

Tasteofchaos at first we thought something along those lines because its very obvious cutting off a horses tail. However today weve seen another of our horses has a handful of mane cut short in the middle of his neck and we *know* he wasnt like that before.

Stranggeeeeee :(

FaithKat we thought that at first but we found it lying on the floor in a perfectly straight pile, (as if snipped and then dumped) and then the mane today is perfectly straight and approx a handful (and he doesnt wear a neck cover).

My friends had some brood mares living out the other yr and when they went to check on them one morning they all had chunks missing from their manes. It looked like someone had decided to cut the tangles out of their manes as the tangles had been left on the floor near the gate.

This happened to a friends welsh cob mare who is brights chestnut with a very light mane and tail. Only her tail was touched and the general concensus was that some just wanted her lovely tail hair either for a rocking horse as mentioned or even extensions!

Im not to sure , what to make of horse tagging , but i have spoken to a couple of police in kent who have had cases of such tagging and mane and tails being cut , and actually they have put it down to theft tagging , now even tho nothing has come about it ,how can we be for sure that its the case of wanting hair ?? , i for one (yes probley is silly but not the chance i would want to take ) in upping secruity .
i have looked throw the internet and came across this

if this is the case of wanting hair ,why would they report it in a newspaper ??

Oh, fair enough. Sounds like straightforward vandalism then but very strange all the same but then there are some very strange people about. Stealing it for some reason I could understand but to cut it and then just leave it is very odd.

We had an issue with kids doing this at my yard after a nearby livery yard went on the news to discuss the same problem. the nearby yard turned out to be a 2yo filly chewing hair (allegedly she could through 5 tails in a night) and ours turned out to be copycat kids having a laugh.
