Hi there I'm looking for some help!!
My horse has recently had a mouth ulcer, and his bit has rubbed it into a small (but very painful) cut on the inside of his mouth. The cut itself heals very quickly.. I originally gave him a full 2 weeks off, and the cut had completely gone, however after about a week of riding him again on a long rein with little contact the cut had not opened but had started to become visible again. I gave him another week off, and the same thing happened again.
I am looking for advice on what to use to harden up the skin on his mouth. I have been told to use alum by my riding instructor and I am trying to get some, but was wondering if anybody knew how it worked.
Also I have seen that people have used surgical spirit and piles cream (preparation H or anusol), but I am hesitant at putting it actually on the inside of his mouth!

We use Glymol on horses with cut mouths, too

I am sure you have done so, but check that the bit isnt in any way damaged or rough.... It wouldnt take much to cause a sore... just a little burr could cause a nasty friction sore

I would also try using a bitless bridle. My horse injured his mouth 10 days ago and had to have clips in his mouth, so I have bought him a Dr. Cook bridle to use and he is going very well in it so far !

i always use haemarroid cream and found it works a treat. in the meantime you could use a hackamore and make sure you put rubber rings on your bit when you start using it again....

when a similar thing happened to my horse, and EDT recommended Allum (i think thats how its spelt) from the chemist. you dilute the crystals in water, soak some cotton wool or something similar and then hold it on the cut. I think its normally used for bedsores and that kind of thing. certainly speeded up the healing of my horse. i did use a bitless bridle for a few months while it was healing too.
