Horses = Your A&E experiences!! x

Mister Jay, lovely little pony that he is, put my OH in A&E with a fractured patella cos he didn't want to hack out.

Jay had a hissy fit, OH eventually came off, and determined not to lose hold of him, got his foot caught in the stirrup, and got dragged! All very nasty - bad, bad Mister Jay!

These are just the horse ones, I have been many other times

1) dislocated shoulder. Fell off rode home put horse in field then mother made me go to casualty

2) smashed up all the ligaments in my knee and the cartlidge etc and had to be air lifted to A&E was super cool. It's all pinned together now after two operations though so all good.

3) horse jumped on ankle and went for xray but nothing broken (sorry NHS for wasting your time)f

non horsey ones include

2 broken wrists, a severe concussion, a broken foot, and probably lots more which I can't remember

I am 25 so I reckon I'm doing well and getting my tax money back at a rate of knots!

Oh dear, not good. Hope you are ok after all your accidents. Hopefully no more soon. x

lets start from age upwards first propper injury 13yrs pony fell on me brocken leg 6 places pined and screwed cauldnt ride for 2 yrs then aged 16 got trampled on brocken coller boan then 21yrs horse sliped on road torn ligerments in ancle then 25 yrs fell of in indoor school on chin split open 20 stitches then 26yrs turning horse out it bolted and pulled shoulder out of socket now its wrighten down it sounds allot but thats horses for you

So far! Only trip caused by one of the horses is when Puzzle, my yearling, spooked at a hose I was trying to get her used to, I was stood directly in front of her and she ran straight over the top of me. By the grace of God she didnt stand on me but she did knock me over straight backwards and I gave myself severe concussion and whiplash. Was SO PAINFUL!

My best A&E experience, by far, was re-breaking my ankle! I broke it the first time falling off a cliff (dont ask....) but I re-broke it when the dog threw herself off the top of the staircase (no banister) and I jumped up, slammed my foot on the ground and rebroke it against the floor! Ouch!!

My OH fell of his pony in a rotational over a showjump and broke his shoulder.

Oh know :( Not good at all hope you and your OH are both ok. My boy ran straight over me once but luckily just had a very swollen, painful foot! x

horsey ones-

dislocated knee after coming off on the road when i was 12.

broken finger at 17(didn't bother for the next 2 fingers i broke- i just splinted them at home)

broken collarbone at 17 (about 3 weeks after the finger above! :))

cracked sternum at 19, and i got a ride in an air ambulance.

broken collarbone again about 6 weeks ago, aged 23!! :(
this time it needs plating as it is the 3rd time it has broken and last x-ray showed no signs of healing at all.

i *think* thats all for horsey hospital trips so far. i have been a few more times for other bone breaks i have done away from horses.

Shattered my elbow whilst on my friends horse. In his defence it was the fence post that did it, not him, however his zooming around at a squillion miles an hour might have contributed to the severity lol

A number of other minor breaks etc, fingers and such but never went to a and e, just doctors then fracture clinics lol, I am hard! Haha

Broken Jaw, shattered cheekbone, facial stitches, broken arm/s (numerous times), crutches, broken hand, fingers, toes, broken teeth, broken ribs, chronic hematomas, brain scans etc etc....

Used to be to first name terms with hospital staff. Brilliant! Suppose thats what you get when you ride/deal with naughty or ruined horses and ponies! Wouldnt change it for the world though...

In 35 years of owning horses, including breeding stallions, and showjumping most of that time, I have only been to A&E once. It happened when I was practising jumping at home and the horse slipped on wet grass and came down on top of me. I had fractured ribs, punctured lung, fractured sternum and fractured jaw. After a couple of months the jaw had to be rebroken and reset. So, seems like it all came at once for me.

Broken collar bone at age 7 falling off a Shitland pony.
Broken arm at 8 tripping over on the way home from school.
Seriously broken arm after falling from a pony at 14. Both bones snapped and dislocated. Ambulance job. Give or take for three days as to whether i would lose the arm. Mum was a bit worried as I played the piano! LOL!
Concussion after being head butted by horse.
Broken toe having been stepped on by a horse. I didnt go initially but it went all manky so had to go in the end!
Seriously broken arm at age 30 something due to being kicked by a youngster.
Back injury after being thrown from a horse. Again I didnt go initially but after a week of being unable to move i thought perhaps i should be carried to A and E!

I went in the middle of the night after the pony I was riding bucked and went straight into a fence post head first. We thought I might have concussion turned out to be whiplash.

However my lucky escape, when I was 8 I was riding a pony on my first XC lesson, pony spooked at something scary in the hedge and bolted up the field, stayed on all the way up the field  Thinking that this 13.2hh pony was going to jump the 5 bar gate as he wasn't slowing down only for him to slam the brakes on in the last few strides, he swung his quarters out and and I flew out the side-door onto the concrete by the gate. It didn't even really bruise, I think I call that lucky! Thank god for my bp!

Incident 1: Spooky Pony vs. a cross pole => crazy sideways jump over pole and panicked bolt => me hitting floor really hard => RI drives me to A&E in the big lorry ( :D ) while discussing what I did wrong => me getting x-rayed for possible broken pelvis. Pelvis not broken. Sent home with paracetamol.

Incident 2: Spooky Pony vs. a cross pole => pony bolts sideways down a slope and stops/bucks => I fly over his front end to hit ground with crunch of helmet => pony jumps over trakehner to escape from schooling field and go home ( ) => I run to office in panic to get a lift to give chase => pony is found grazing beside the daffodils in the driveway of his yard => I hop back on and have canter to make sure we're ok => I go to tack shop to buy new hat, and tack shop lady sends me to A&E on account of dazed look => get neck x-ray => nothing seriously wrong, sent home with paracetamol.

Incident 3: Spooky Pony vs. a cross pole (are you starting to get a theme here? :o ) => panicked bolt + sudden stop => me hitting the ground helmet first again, head ringing like a bell => RI makes me have a sit-down with a cuppa to make sure I'm ok => hack home with girls from riding school as company to make sure we get there all right => take myself to A&E on RI's advice => another neck x-ray. X-ray technician suggests change of hobby. Or maybe that was already the previous time? => sent home with paracetamol.

Incident 4: Spooky Pony in a warm-up field => takes off for no apparent reason => I try to haul his back teeth out => he does the stop/buck thing again => I hit ground hard, but not on my head this time! => shoulder hurts like blazes, and I'm in too much pain to continue riding => nurse present excludes dislocation, declares broken clavicle unlikely => I stay for rest of show/food (not going to miss free food, &%$&it!) => take myself to A&E, finding driving rather difficult => another x-ray, but of my shoulder for a change => ligament damage => sent home with paracetamol.

Hmmm... :o

Millitiger - Oh dear, not lucky at all. I think i should wrap you in bubble wrap :p

Aprilblossom - Ouch, i bet that killed. X

Isobelle - Your making me cringe!! Ouch, Ouch, Ouch. I think you need wrapping in bubble wrap to :p x

Pintoarabian - Wow, you have been very lucky with one accident, but must have been very very painful!!

Dozzie - Another person needed to be put in bubble wrap. Ouch, lot's of accidents.

Hope everyone ok xx

Horsey A & E experience 1 - fell off horse onto jump cup. 6 inch gash in thigh, 18 stitches  Ugh!

HAEE 2 - tried to fish thing out of horsey's mouth that he shouldn't have eaten.

***WARNING!! DO NOT CLICK ON THIS LIINK IF YOU ARE SQUEAMISH***I MEAN IT!!

http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o233/rancidprong/?action=view&current=finger1.jpg

Thanks to the plastic surgeon I have not lost any body parts

HAEE 3 - squished hand against back of horse's neck when she stopped at a jump. Result - spiral fracture of 4th metcarpal. Another plastic surgery job to insert screws in the bone. Unfortunately the plastic surgeon didn't fix my bags & sags while he was at it :o

Ouch, Ouch, Ouch thank god you had a hat on!! You have been extra lucky. x

my horse related A+E visit was when i managed to faint whilst on pony galloping through a field. Pony galloped out onto the road with me still on board (luckily no traffic) slipped on tarmac, depositing me onto the floor then getting up & eating grass with me still unconcious. One blue flashy ambulance ride & one night in hospital later, i emerge with a grazed hip & elbow + a rather destroyed hat! the words lucky & escape come to mind...

i remember none of this, i only know what happened as other people told me after. for months after the only memory i had of the entire day was watching the full time football scores on tv in the hospital. apparently i watched athletics on tv all afternoon & can remember none of it!

my most amusing a+e visit though had to be when a ladder blew off the top of a 3 storey house & landed on my arm & head. luckily i was wearing a cycle helmet at the eime & again emerged largely unscathed.

i think i must actually be a super hero...

Without tempting fate I think I've been....... no I am not even going to go there.

I had a severe concussion which resulted in fitting, eyes rolling in back of head and swearing at consultant! This resulted in a CT scan and overnight stay in ICU, and a further four day stint in an ortho ward for shoulder problem (nerves in arm bruised and lost use of arm completely for three days).

Then since owning this horse (in the signature) six years ago I've had a bit of bad luck. I had a bit of a nasty fall about four years ago in which I was convinced I'd broken my pelvis (after getting checked out ok by paramedics I got back on horse then dismounted and upon hitting the ground with my feet was in agony) and got stretchered off on a spinal board (in front of Ted Edgar - very embarrassing as he said "are you okay love" to me, bless).

Then after getting chucked off the same horse a further three times I've ended up with a 'very large' (according to consultant) prolapsed disc for which I was offered an op.

Oh and a couple of weeks ago (same bl**dy horse) I had to go to A&E after falling off on a fun ride and banging my head and feeling very sick. I wouldn't mind but a couple of weeks before we'd been jumping a novice xc track and 3ft jumping course without a problem yet on the fun ride he decided he couldn't possibly attempt to jump a 2ft straw bale jump and ran out and decked me yet again!! Lucky the slipped disc survived though! LOL

I know that compared with others I have been .... no I'm not going to tempt fate, I have a one day event on sunday. xxx

Oh dear oh dear, i think from what you are saying that your accidents happen when you jump a pony :p am i right?? You have been very lucky, hope you ok x

Spinal Tap - Ewwwwww hope you ok. Awww bless not good x

Spookypony

Even if it IS broken you're sent home with paracetamol don't worry. That's all I ever get given. Think it's to try and stop me turning up again six months later like I always do.

And FWIW horsecrazy, I have had a dislocated finger, a haemotoma removed from my back and various other things since all those happend. It's just if left to my own devices I don't go to A&E as it is the pits (unless you arive by helicopeter when you go straight in!) I wait about six weeks and then see GP who refers me to hospital for xrays/surgeries. Much more civilised that way but you have to leave it long enough that they believe it isn't an emergencey and pack you off to casualty you see!

I was kicked in the face 2 ish years ago when I was 14. Cracked cheek bone, a hole *through* my cheek, 7 stitches and about 2 hours being operated on. 'Twas an accident though. Wrong place wrong time :(

Applecart - :( Awwww not good at all. Hope you are ok. Good Luck Sunday :D OMG:eek: got XC saturday i better not come on saturday and tell you i am in A&E. Please Please No!!

On spinal taps note, not me but my old pony decided to spaz out big style whilst being tied up next to her hay net... RI was doing the tying up... Unfortunately lead rope gets caught around his thumb... Said thumb POPS! Off into hay net. Pony begins to chomp her hay like a calm little cobbette.... RI calmly goes to tell YO who roots around in hay net (disgruntled pony looks on in disapproval at removal of hay), finds thumb and whisks him off to hospital to have it successfully reattached. You couldn't make it up.
