Horses = Your A&E experiences!! x

QR- When I was 15 I fell off a bucking pony in a spectacular way, landing on the roof of the RS toilets (about 8ft above the surface of the school) corrugated metal roof, queue pain in knee, thought i'd be brave, got back on, pony then zoomed round, happened to bang knee several more times on fence posts in the school before deciding it really did hurt! A&E for 6 hours, dislocated with torn ligaments, ward for 5 more hours ish, x-ray nothing broken, sent home, 3 weeks off feet, keyhole camera to see extent of damage. 6 weeks off riding and school.

More reccently broken foot, then following year crushed toe - had to have some bone removed by doc when fluid drained off. My friends horse and my horse took turns in stamping on me!!
Toes dislocate now all the time as a result of being broken for most of my younger years!! Have to wear socks to stop it happening, quite a cool party trick though as no longer hurts me but looks vile lol!!

Some other accidents here sound really bad, mine was more of a comedy fall I only realised after when my knee was swollen that i'd done some damage!! I still laugh about it now despite the pain and the recovery time, it was the funniest fall ever, just wish i'd seen it or someone had videod it!! I'd have been a u tube hit!!
 
1) Broken foot, fell off when Dylan pecked on soft ground after jumping a ditch out hacking. I landed on my back but think my foot twisted in the stirrup. I got back on fine, but by the time I got back to the yard it had swollen and seized up and I couldn't put any weight on it.

2) Broken hand, kicked by friend's mare. Went to A&E that night, got x-rayed and told I was fine, then got called back in 2 weeks later to be told my hand was actually broken!
 
My first horse related trip to A&E was after beging knocked over by a horses, my knee made contact with a rather large stone, luckily no broken bones, just crutches for 2 weeks. "nd time was when my friends horse barged throught a gate out on a hack and smashed my knee into the steel latch of the gate, again nothing broken but 2 weeks on crutches.
Over the years i have had many a fall off of horses, and alth most have not ended with A&E trips, i do know have minor compression of the spine, but even that wont stop me from ridding!!!
 
I don't think my toes have uncurled since I started reading this thread... ooof! Makes you wonder why we bother doesn't it!

I've only been to A&E with horsey accidents twice (although bearing in mind I've only been riding a year and a half, I think that's plenty!) - once for a broken toe after being trodden on, and once for a sprained knee when my usually saintly horse bolted while I was halfway on. The nurses at my local A&E know me pretty well though, because for some reason I seem to manage to concuss myself on a regular basis! Falling up stairs and hitting my head on some metal railings at the top; ducking under a metal bar and standing up too soon; falling off my bike x1000; bending down next to a door and catching my head on the door handle on the way back up... it's like I have some kind of grudge against my own skull! My mum's such a worrier, so she makes me go to A&E for every mild concussion. They probably think I'm a right wuss. :p
 
3 times.

1st time booted in the leg by a 19.2 shire, on my birthday.

2nd time kicked full on the kneecap by my arab.

3rd time kicked in the head by same arab. Which was bad timing as I was about to get married. had to go and sign some pre wedding papers at the local registry office, turned up with two black eyes and a mass of stiches (after A and E), the nice ladies in the office were saying 'are you SURE you want to marry this man'..
 
only once have I actually been to A&E cause I refused the other times but this was out of my control! I fell of my friends mare, smacked my head on the ground, promptly passed out for about a min, came to and insisted on getting back on my own pony to cool him down even though my vision had gone 'spotty' and I had the worst migrane! my parents took one look at me and took me straight to hospital where I was diagnosed with concussion and was told my hat saved me from at least a fractured skull, madness lol!
 
1st time - horse jumped on my foot and broke my little toe (I then had to walk a mile home - ouch!)

2nd time - Horse trod on foot as I was trying to yank it out the way (and failed), sprained ankle

3rd time - disagreement showjumping, I wanted to jump the fence, horse decided I should fly solo and I crashed into the fillers on my head. Felt fine but got progressively worse with pain in my neck and couldn't move very well. Went to docs who sent me to A&E with suspected broken neck - it wasn't but I'd put my pelvis out, dislodged the bottom 4 and top 4 vertebrae and had 20% of the movement I should have in my middle back. Cue lots of visits to chiro.

4th time - came off SJ and landed under horse who trampled over me. 2 broken ribs, concussion and one SERIOUSLY swollen boob which he also trod on - in terms of pain this was probably the worst!

Various other tumbles where I haven't gone to A&E but have spent copious amounts at the chiropractor sorting out.

All in all, I think I've come off pretty lightly to be honest reading some of these :-) The only 'bad' fall was the one where I got trampled.
 
Just the one so far in 24 years which is quite a fluke and having now said this i bet i'll end up in there tomorrow!!

Jumping aged 15, pony tripped on landing and fell, i ended up underneath him and as he got up he caught me in the face, trod on my hand, and scraped the skin off my knees, resulting in broken nose and 2 lovely black eyes, 3 broken fingers and severly bruised hand, ligament damage, skinned knee ( literally the whole knee cap and was the most painful part!) and fractured bone in the bottom of my back. I still suffer from arthritis as a result in my back but my GP, who by pure chance lived in the house overlooking the paddock i was jumping in, saw the whole thing and says i was so lucky as he though i'd be far more badly injured or even a goner.....i was so concussed i cant remember anything but aparently i kept asking if my makeup was still ok ( my face was caked in blood and my nose all mangled but my friend kept assuring me it was perfect to keep me calm!!) and demanding Dr Ross aka George Clooney treat me ( i was really quite obsessed by ER at )the time. Embarressingly a family friend was the abulance driver and loves telling that story!

Sounds awful, especially to have permanent reminders you can physically see.

horsecrazy25- pony was fine, just a muddy head!
 
I have been quite lucky so far.

Age 7 - fell off pony mid gallop and woke up in hospital 3 days later.

Age 25 - fell off a friends horse got minor concussion

They are the only horse falls i have had with an injury...however...

last year i picked up a lightweight showjump pole to put up a cross pole for a friend and dislocated my elbow..ended up having to have surgery on it where they removed the LCL ligament and grafted a new one from my triceps cue 3 months out of the saddle..

I've been very lucky as I've only had 1 horse related injury that I've gone to A & E for and that was when I came off during a riding lesson and landed on my back and smacked my ankle into the arena fencing fracturing it. Stood up and it felt ok so thought I'd just banged it. Got back on horse and finished lesson.Was a bit sore when I got off at end. Watched daughters lesson and then tried to walk across the yard but it hurt loads, Final straw was trying to turn on my foot to get in the car and could feel my ankle swelling inside my boot. Daughter dropped me off at A&E and went into town to pay her bills :rolleyes: . Came back to collect me expecting to see me in a tubi grip but was confronted by me in a wheel chair and sporting a slab cast. Wore that for a week then a walking boot for 4 weeks. Must confess to being back in the saddle after 4 weeks though :p

Had various bruises from being stood on, caught arm on back of saddle recently resulting in an excellent bruise :p and pulled a muscle in my back when I came off my old share horse when she reared and spun and I hung on to the reins :rolleyes:
 
Twice and neither when I was riding:

The first was climbing through an electric fence (luckily not on!) with a haybale, caught my foot in the bottom strand and twisted it round the foot so that it pulled tight and broke one of the metatarsals...:confused:

The second was more impressive when I got a horse in my eye - he didn't fit. Result a CT scan report which ran to a second page and a total of 6 1/2 hours surgery. The only tell-tale now is an eye lid which doesn't fully lift (but does a job in that it cuts out any double vision from the eye not able to go up fully either!)

The one I count as my "third" was on an endurance ride where my horse sat down as we were going downhill. Because I wasn't particularly holding on to anything at the time, I slid headfirst down her back and the back of my hat tilted in and bruised just below my skull as I hit the ground giving bruising around the very top of the spinal cord and base of the brain and concussion-like symptoms. Fortunately the first aid cover at the ride was provided by the Sports Medicine Trust and I spent the rest of it sat with a qualified doctor who was doubling up as a checkpoint and avoided A&E completely :)

I had never had any A&E horse related experiences until a year ago when I had two! First was galloping along the moor when horse then decided to have a bucking it and eventually I went flying, got back on and rode home but couldn't get my boot off my ankle hurt so much, had so was a fun Friday night in A&E!

Then a few months later I was picking Lily's back foot out and she kicked it out whacking me on the chin, blood everywhere! Luckily she wasn't shod!
 
I have been really lucky so far. Touch Wood.

I borrowed a friends horse for PC Camp, which turned out to be completely nutty. It got caught in the stable, and trapped my hand between his face and the wall. Swapped horse, as he became dangerous, carried on riding on another horse for the rest of the week, with a hand the size of a foot ball. Medics just ice sprayed it. Went to A&E the day after Camp and had broken my hand in 3 places.
 
Not exactly a riding one, but a few xmas's ago I skidded my 4x4 on black ice and rolled it over - had to kick through the windscreen to get out, resulting in very painful foot. Police that arrived and people that stopped to help kept trying to ring an ambulance for me to get checked over but I kept refusing reasoning that I had the farrier that afternoon and couldn't possibly go to hospital!
Luckily the policeman and one of the women that stopped to helped both had horses and said "We completely understand - you get a lift to the yard and we'll sort everything here, just try and get to A&E later" !

Priorities people!! :D
 
Mine sounds quite minor compared to all these, my Tb and my pony were not seeing eye to eye and decided the best place they could sort this out in 7 acres was to have a kicking match over me a little painful as most kicks landed on me both being shod :P Ended up with my elbow split open to the bone which has to be the most painful thing i have ever done, and was glued back together at which i passed out :S

Although my brother had a pretty impressive An E trip after we were going to get my hat for him to ride and mum thought he would be fine on the nutty chestnut as we lived so close with her leading (he had ridden maybe twice) living next to the river in cambridge means we have the bumps, the gun went off the horse went vertical over backwards onto a car and then onto road with brother under him, there was me on the polo pony who had to sort the horses aged 11 with them going mad :S Queue ambulance trip loss of speech hearing etc Intensive care for 5 days and a full recovery and back to his annoying self
