Read a post on here the other day, someone wanting to do something with a horseshoe? And a few people mentioned how best to clean them up...
I have 4 of my last horses shoes, and want to make a dreamcatcher from one (they look brilliant - or will if I can figure out how to do them!)
BUT
The shoes need cleaning up a bit - any ideas how best to do that? Can always just paint them if need be :P

Wire brush or wire wool will get them clean - but because they are steel they will just rust if you don't paint them.

You'll be able to catch some seriously heavy dreams in that!

You will probably need to use a primer first tho otherwise the paint may flake. You could always gold leaf them - they look really pretty done like that.

after cleaning off any rust or dirt you should soak in vinegar and then use a steel wool pad to clean them up (they go very silver) - elbow grease required. its what the boys at college do to their specimens

its best to paint them though to avoid long term rust

The joys of quick reply! Sorry thefarrier, wasnt suggesting you were talking cobblers. I meant the title- someone asking how to clean their horses shoes

I had old horse shoes as centre pieces at my wedding and to clean them I used Cillit Bang (seriously!) Spray... leave and bang... the rust is gone! (Heaven knows what is in that stuff... it's lethal! But it works with minimal scrubbing!)
