This may be a silly question..but.. has anyone ever had a horse fall over on a walker? I've always used a walker but I moved yards in the summer & the horse walker doesn't have rubber matting like the old one did.. I just wondered if anyone's horse has ever fallen over inside? I have this fear that he could slip when it's wet as it's just on concrete.. I've been avoiding using it in the wet. Am I just being rediculous?? lol.. If the worst did happen & he did fall would it just stop & would there be enough room for him to get back up??
 
My 30y/o jumped the 5ft fence out of the one at our old yard so she had room to do that! I'm guessing she'd have had room to stand if she fell, never put her back in after that as she put her foot through the fence jumping it and got banned!
 
Oh my goodness...I can't believe she managed to jump it!! It's probably an irrational worry..it's just coz he's a nervy tb & I've know him to slip when in a panic..even with his roadnails in..
 
At a yard near me, now shut down, a horse went down on the walker.

The person whose care they were in didn't check on them and the other 3 horses just kept on stepping over him.
He couldn't be saved and suffered a very undignified end :(.

I wouldn't say these were 'normal' circumstances as the horse was old (shouldn't even have been on there) and the girl who was in charge of them at the time was incompetent.
The owner to this day does not know what happened to her poor beloved horse :(.
 
Ive seen a horse trip over itself even on rubber, Have also seen a horse stop and duck to get in with his mate behind HAHA!!! I dont think id like to put mine on one that didnt have rubber :) but if its rough concrete and not set too fast or on for too long it can only be the same as walking a horse out on the road
 
It depends on the walker, as well, some of them have ''emergency brakes'', so if a horse goes down, they stop as soon as a partition hits it.
I wouldn't want any of mine walking around on just concrete, but having said that, rubber matting when wet could be just as slippery. I would say there is plenty enough of room for them to get up, especially that when they slip and fall over, it's normally just the back end going from underneath them.
 
It is quite rough concrete.. & there are always people about & the ladies who run the yard have their office right next to the walker..mmm I just worry that if he did fall like quirky said he'd be panicking & the others whould just step over him.. I suppose i could worry about anything really..lol
 
Another thing you have to watch with a concrete floor is the horse going lame!!! My horse damaged his hind suspensory and part of the recovery work was going on the walker 40 mins x 2 per day and he suffered from concussion in the feet!!!! The yard owner put rubber flooring down straight away as we se the walker alot for rehab after injury:D
 
Oh!! Never thought of that but I only use it for a maximum of about 15 mins just to get him out the way while mucking out in the evening.. & probably only about 2-3 times per week..
 
Yes same that was until my horse got injured and needed to go on it more!! What I guess im trying to say is a rubber floor would be better just in case your horse did need to go on it more!! Hopefully your horse wont get injured but say it happened you would be a bit stuck!!! ;)
