I have a 16.3 ID x TB who is very big in the shoulders and chest but pretty normal everywhere else. I find most rugs (Amigo, Premier Equine) too tight around the chest and shoulders and am thinking about trying one of the Horseware XL rugs. The4y say they are 20% bigger/deeper around the front.

Does anyone use one of these rugs on a horse other than a cob or draft horse?

Any recommendations gratefully received......

I bought a bug rug XL for my chunky WB, but it was just too big for her in all respects. It was worn twice and has now sat in my utility room for 2 years!

I have one HW Horseware XL rug from about 15 years ago and fits my 17.1 ISH (almost pure ID) well. Amigo just not big enough for him & PE just dont suit him. The best rugs I have found for him are Weatherbeeta and just recently a brand called Swish rugs which are deeper than the WB ones

Not tried the XL ones but I have tb who sounds like your horse and premier equine were the worst for fit closely followed by Amigos.

Weatherbeetas work well freestyles and takas but not Landas, not sure about their new comfitec range. Rhinos are better than the Amigos however the ones I have are high necks so I think the design helps and FALs are OK.

I have the fly rug for my KWPN stallion who is built like a tank,he's quite thick in the shoulder and cresty so normally ends up with neck covers wedged half way up or rubbing his mane.....it fits him beautifully except the surcingles are SO long!!!! i have to stitch them up shorter but its a minor job and its the only fly rug that doesnt strangle him or rub his mane out.

I've bought the xl fly rug for my connie x tb, who also has massive shoulders and chest, as I've spent 3 years buying different fly rugs, which gape or rub his chest! this xl rug seemed to fit a lot better when I tried it on!! so only time will tell if its totally perfect.

I have big shouldered boys and find Premier Equine are ok as long as they have the shoulder gussets. FALs are slightly wider in the shoulder. The PE had rubbed the bigger shouldered one very slightly but not enough to make me want to change it whereas the FAL doesn't rub at all. I do have older FAL rugs though (about 12 years old) and know they've moved production out of the UK since then. I'm told they're not as good quality but don't know if they've changed the cut. I've also been told that Bucas are pretty good for big horses but never tried any myself.

I have 2 XL stable rugs on my shire x WB and they fit really well. I have also found the Big Horse Rug Shop (think that is what its called). I have a lightweight turnout, cotton sheet and thermatex type cooler. Best fit ever on him and lovely and deep so they don't look like mini skirts. PE I found OK everywhere except a bit tight on the neck.

They fit my big shouldered Friesian. PE, Rambo, masta etc are all way too tight. The ones that actually fit him best though are the weatherbeeta freestyles.

Just to update you all, I managed to find a 2nd hand Amigo XL which seems to fit nicely. I also went for a new Weatherbeeta Comfitec Dynamic Plus which is also nice and roomy in front.

I have this problem with my mare,I've not tried the horseware xl yet but have tried virtually every other popular make! Weatherbeeta seemed to fit well but then rubbed her front badly, a ruggles rug fit her better than anything else I tried & didn't rub. A Rambo fly rug from my other horse fits well but his rambo turnouts were too tight. A swish stable rug also fits but I've not tried their turnouts.

The horseware do disnt fit my friesian well it was just sloppy - try the big horse shop there's have been brill for mine

The big horse shop have been recommended to me by the person who sold me the Amigo XL! Don't be put off by the comments about leaking Lite rugs, she says water got through near the tail flap once and then didn't do it again.....
