Horsewatch launches petition for a change to horse passport law. please sign.....
Essex Horsewatch is urging horse owners to sign a government petition for a change in horse passport law to stop stolen horses being sold on.

The organisation is also asking for traders who are authorised to issue passports to be checked by the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and for a national passport database to be set up to allow instant access for police and vets.

As of this morning (Monday 6 October) the petition had 205 signatures.

The petition closes on 5 November.

The new passport legislation coming in next year to mandate microchipping also requires that details are stored a central database accessible to the general public via a website

Further, microchips must be inserted by a vet, and there must be a check to ensure there is no existing micro-chip or evidence that one has been removed.

Not foolproof by any means but an improvement over the current position.

I want to sign on principle, but I think the suggestions from this petition are just too vague!

How can you regulate the sale of horses? Plus in some special circumstances you may need to sell a horse within 3 months of a passport being issued (think weanlings).

I don't think a central database is feasible without serious funding / cost. I thought originally the British Horse Database was going to do that, but it folded. I think a government database would equal a horse licence system.

I think that Horsewatch need to check out some facts. Passports were not introduced to prevent any sales of any sort, but to ensure that certain drugs were not used in horses destined for the food chain. Incorrect information such as this will not encourage the Government to take the petition seriously.
I am not disagreeing with the petition here.
