As some of you know, my four-year old mare has just moved yards. She is not backed yet but we go on lots of in-hand walks. When we walk past fields of geldings, they all come running to the fenceline and prance about, staring at her like moon-eyed drooling idiots.

I have had my gelding at this yard for the last year and half, and they do not do this to him. I have been on hacks with friends' mares, and they do not do this. I had an old mare before I bought my gelding, and they did not do this to her.

What's the deal with my young mare?? Why is she like a hot girl at the beach with every heterosexual guy shouting inappropriate things? Luckily for me, she is not very reactive to them and just gets on with it. At the moment. God help us when she comes out of anestrus in the spring.

My mare's history with the boys is....dubious. She did get herself knocked up as a teenager.

I experienced the opposite. Used to ride out on a proper gentleman of a gelding, who’d nicker at the local hill pony mares, so we’d get followed by 3/4 mares (often foals in tow!) until we were almost at the yard.

I have two mares. One seems to attract attention wherever she goes, the other seems invisible to the geldings. It's the invisible one who has had the babies.

Who told the boys?! Poor Hermosa having her business spread everywhere ?

There is a pony mare at the sanctuary who gets pestered and even mounted by the other mares every time she's in season. The geldings know better than to bother her but she will have two girls fighting over her. Only her! Nobody else!

some are just like this-have 2 stallions......mares never ever react to one but everything comes in to raging season instantly for the other!

I've never really thought of this before but I wonder if there's a 'type' that's inherently attractive to other horses - the equine Brad Pitt / George Clooney or Jennifer Anisoton / Julia Roberts (and if so, whether our concept of a handsome horse matches theirs!) or whether it's purely about hormones? I suspect the latter and some must exude more than others?

perhaps she is just, pretty.

two generations of horses ago i had a mare like this, attractive to all and yet she was respected by all, a kind of horse leader.

i still have one of her grandsons, he is very dominating but honest at the same time.

I have an older gelding with an extremely beautiful face that everyone comments on. Deffo a Brad Pitt type.

Mares at my first livery yard just used to fall at his feet when he walked down the barn aisle. Some would stop at his stable door to wet themselves with excitement.

He had a very special nicker he used with them to say helloooo as well.

He's been in a huge field with just geldings for the last few years but I wonder if he would still have the same effect if he ever came out of retirement.

My old TB made the boys go googly-eyed until she was a very old lady. She was quite unimpressed by them, but instant adoration on their part!

Current newest one was squirting for our bigger gelding today - no idea why, she doesn’t even like him, all they do is argue!!!
