Does anyone have amusing or otherwise horse facts or sayings that can be used for Pony Club Camp Notice board?
There is a sig that has the Arab one about the God and the Wind which I would particularly like? Any contributions gratefully accepted!

Every horse deserves to be loved by a little girl at least once in their life.

I also know quite a few origins of sayings that i say on the carriage.
Pole position- when a pair of horses are given nose bags the cleverest would put their nose on the pole to get to the bottom of it. hench pole position means first

dropping off to sleep- when you were in the cheap seats on a coach (on top) if you fell asleep you would "drop off" and more often than not the coach would not stop for you.

nightmare- In london (mostly) the streets were poorly lit at night so all the very old, ill broken down horses would be pressed into service. Many of these horse could barely move so a journey could take 2 or 3 time longer than it would noramlly, hence night mare journey.

hagridden- protien was thought to be the key to a horses diet in years gone by and it would cause night sweats, blowing and colic. when the grooms came in in the morning it looked like a witch had come in in the night and ridden the horse hard. kicking over the traces, cock inn all have horsey origins.

Cock horses- these were the horses stationed at large hills to assist with the larger vehicals braking or powering up the hill. Most pubs called "the cock" or similar are near hills and had stables, common misconception that they're all to do with cock fightings. There is agument over why they were called cock horses but the most popular thought at the moment (although the letters page of carriage driving has been full of theories last few months) is that its because these horses would be docked and nicked leaving their tail like a cockrel.

Kicking over the traces- cleaver coaching horses would get their leg over the traces to get themselves a break. A horse cant pull like that and has to be un clipped and untangleg before resuming work.

We have a hill locally that is very steep, it is called Brassknocker as there was a big brass knocker at the bottom by the pub which the coachman would knock to get the stable boy to bring the cock horse out.

Love having new and different things to put up on the camp noticeboard - amazing what reactions they cause and hopefully everyone learns something new -started doing it a few years ago and when I said I wouldn't do it again got roars of 'oh no!' so many thanks for your input

We have a village nearby at the foot of a steep slope called Pishill! The former coaching inn now pub dedicates part of its website to pronounciation of the name!
 
Another carriagy fact, hackney and cab horses were always dark bay/black because then the dark hair wouldn't show up on mens suits but the bigger carriages for higher would line up outside the family homes and would have grey horses because inevitably the little girl of the house would be sent out to pick a carriage and would always pick the grey!

I know what you mean about people always being shocked when they hear these old sayings, its part of my spheel on the carriage. I think people like it so they can go say it down the pub and sound smart! lol I'll probs remember some more soon, they're all the ones i say on a regular basis anyway, not worked for a few weeks so they're not at the front of my mind!
