Horsey FB sites...

They're just ridiculous. Have you noticed when the little fan clubs come flocking too? Usually people that are on the same yard/ have bought horses off these idiots and start commenting saying X is amazing and X sells wonderful horses. Just really winds me up.

Oh yes, I've noticed this in the past few months actually. There appears to be a fashion now of about twenty people (ppl) commenting on every ad, saying "Aw hun, ur nt selin her r u? id av her, shes a luvli mare n dosent put a foot rong"...and "ive rode dis pony n i can say its amazin will do nethink u want n gr8 wit ne1 on his back"....

I wish they would crawl back under the stone that they came from...

Lol. I just tried to read these posts, and went cross-eyed trying to make sense of the txt spk. Must be my age...

Common over here in NI
'Wanted: 15h to 16h, aged 5-8, schoolmaster, been there done it capable of jumping 1.10+, doing a novice dressage test, hunting in a snaffle, hacking quietly alone and in company, good to do everything with, will pass a vet, can be ridden by a novice. Budget £800'
AND then they get upset and say that any posters who reply mentioning that the list of requirements perhaps merits another '0' on the price are being horrible and 'not everyone has money to burn'. I tend to reply and ask them if they would sell a 5 bed house in the country for the price of a 2 bed town terrace....

I hate the sites too. So many posts looking a schoolmaster suitable for beginner/novice, 14.2-16h 6-8 years old and budget of £800. Must jump 1m (usually competively) good dressage and never stop xc. Also must be a saint out hacking and preferably live out all year long.

You could sell a horse like that for £8000!!

And they get all offended when you tell them that they will have to compromise on something, most likely age.

Or the ones that say "anyone got rugs to fit a 16.2" or "anyone got a 5f9 rug" - I takes a lot to stop myself from replying yes, try a saddlery :rolleyes3:

Ets: lol sportsmanB, same site same problems - and I'm not too sure that the van advertised on the page is safe to transport horses! Did you like the "my sister has been very lucky to ride my horse but it is now for sale" post?!

lol you are spending too much time of FB moomin!! yu is startin to sound like yu is 1 of them init!

Someone on my local group is trying to sell an unbroken 3yr old bog-standard IDxTB with scary lower leg confo for £2000! And someone else wants a trailer for a 16hh with good floor and ramp for £250. The mind boggles.

I got someone very upset when I posted that a senior person at a major rescue org says in talks that the first advice he gives anyone who asks him about buying a horse is to put £800 in a savings account & leave it there for emergencies. This was in response to a couple of threads where people had bought horses for peanuts on weekly payments & had been unable to keep up payments of just £10pw as their hours had been cut. You would have suggested that poor people should undergo compulsory sterilisation before being worked to death the abuse I got.

If nothing else these fb pages do help to dispel the myth that only posh people own horses!! The most worrying thing is the total lack of social filter some horsey teenage girls have. They post literally everything that comes in to their heads then they're clawing each other's cyber eyes out. There's a lot of that on our local site and one case in particular where the poor horse is falling victim to a daft kid who thinks she's some sort of expert and her illiterate peers who are determined to crucify her. My biggest bugbear is "don't have the time" when what they really mean is "don't have money to geld".

What REALLY makes me sick is the crappy dealers that break in average to poor horses, many of which have behavioural/ physical problems and then try sell them cheap saying they're just a bit green but perfect to do otherwise. There's an unfortunate animal on one of the sites this morning that is 6, has been backed 8 weeks, yet hasn't cantered yet and there's no pics of it riding..... I commented and asked why it hadn't cantered yet (not even a tiny one) and was met with a barrage of abuse saying he didn't like to rush his horses and what did I know blah blah blah. He then went as far as to send me a massive essay on private message which took me so long to read as it was illiterate basically going on about how he rode for 'top ppl' and 'top proffesionals' arghhhh I only asked a simple question!

Saw that advert on chit xxxxxx xxx dread to think where it will end up. Especially the kids saying 'oooh ive just gotta ave it'

Yes, there's one particular person on my local one who has a habit of posting up ads for scraggy coloured cobs etc, barely handled, saying "Must go as haven't got the time or funds due to circumstances changing and need to reduce stock". A few days later, you see her responding to ads on the very same site, for equally scraggy cobs asking how much someone wants and can she pick it up. Absolute scum of society.

We've got one like that on the suffolk Facebook page. Every time someone has some thing cheap whether it s a rug or cob colt, you can guarantee she will pop up. 'How much? ' 'when can I view' -I've PM'D you'. If the pony is for free she gets really excited. Random wanted adds as well. Then everything is up for sale. A few weeks later she's out buying cheap or taking in free to good home

There was someone like that at a yard I was at for a while (but not for long!). A little while back she was "sob, sob, my precious horse died of colic" on facebook. Yeah, that's the one I reported you over when you left it in the stable with no hay for 48 hours because you "hadn't got round to getting any". The 17.2 that you gave a tiny haynet to everyday to last it from 5pm to 10 or 11 the next day that only didn't starve because other people stepped in. The one that you carried on riding - cantering & jumping - despite the vet advising retirement because of repeated tendon breakdowns. The one you kept hanging on in pain for the best part of a day after vet said either op or pts because you were phoning round all your friends trying to borrow the money so it could be injection & cremation rather than the hunt because you "couldn't bear to see your precious horse shot". She still has 4/5 (changes regularly), all FTGH or £peanuts, can't look after any of them for toffee & goes round telling everyone she is a trainer!

Well lo and behold...said ponies in my OP are now back up for 'giving away' as the teenage pouter appears to have 'wasted the owner's time'.

Groan.

lol Moomin, I know exactly the advert you mean and was sitting on my hands this morning to stop myself saying what I really thought :p

However there are also some good sellers on these groups - my new one, advertised on one of them, arrived on Sunday :D

I did laugh the other day when I saw an advert for someone wanting a sharer. £25 a week for 4 days a week - must be a good rider as horse needs bringing on under saddle and I am not experienced enough to do this.

Eh naw love! YOU pay someone to school your horse, not them pay you!

I saw that one on what i think is the same group. The guy has a really really high turnover too

We had one a month or so ago, they wanted a sharer for their horse which couldn't be ridden but needed lunging a few times a week & then they could start to bring it back into ridden work after a couple of months plus do yard duties all for a very reasonable £25 a week contribution.

Funnily enough no one seemed to want to pay to lunge this lady's horse & do her jobs.

Then you get people like me who would love a horse of their own but can't afford one and have no where to keep one so refuse to get one and continue riding riding school horses.

Starting to think i'm rare after going on some horsey facebook pages.

This is exactly the same as me although im looking at buying my RS horse xx

I made the HUGE mistake of advertising my boy on there for 2 days a week loan. Well these are just some of the replies I got messaged to me (no word of a lie):

1) 'Hi, I've seen your advert and I don't drive so would you consider paying for my taxis to the yard? I don't like buses and hate bikes! Thanks!'

2) 'Hi I know your advert said you were looking for a lightweight adult. I'm 14 but very experienced - I've ridden Michael Owen's race horses.' (she was also 15 stone it turns out...)

3) 'Can I come try your pony to see if I like him? I can't come until XX date as I'm in hospital. Don't worry I can still ride - it's just a mental health thing but I'm not allowed out until then.'

I've given up. No sharer, no loan and no paying for taxis. I'd rather pay my instructor to come ride him on the days I can't be there due to working away than going through advertising him again. :(

And people wonder why I won't use Face Book........

The problem isn't Facebook as such, it's the people using it. I use Facebook but never come across anything like these things, I just don't join those groups. The horsey sites I'm on don't seem to have this sort of thing going on.

Which site is best for giggles?

Giggles? What on earth is funny about completely inexperienced owners having no idea how to look after a horse? It breaks my heart to read these stories, and you're looking for "giggles"?

I really think you've taken this the wrong way and I'm sure Fides didn't mean it like that. Fides has always come across as a responsible horse owner and has offered valuable advice to myself and a lot of other members, with the horse's welfare at the forefront of her mind.

There was one last night of a teenager on her her pony bareback with bridle and head collar in a field. There were 3 photos of said pony rearing from different angles. Her question was how is my position when my pony is rearing? SERIOUSLY she then went on to say pony always does at the start of schooling because she doesn't like it and she couldn't afford to get it's teeth/back etc checked but pony wasn't in pain just didn't like schooling!!! But how was her position? Did she need to lean forward more! Joke absolute joke

Which site is best for giggles?

I can't see anything remotely fun about these sites it sounds just awful heartbreaking and depressing .
I don't have a FB habit it sounds like it's a good job my head might explode poor poor horses so many of them deserve so much better .
The older I get the less I can cope with all this sort of thing so I just concentrate on my own useless work shy money absorbing cuddys .
Too many horses too few owners who know which ends the front .
